Sweden's major sawmill companies S\u00f6dra and Setra faced a challenging third quarter as global economic uncertainties continued to weigh on demand and prices, leading to a substantial decline in sales.<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00f6dra reported a significant drop in operating profit<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the latest financial report released by S\u00f6dra, the group's net sales for Q3 2023 amounted to SEK 6,545 million (approximately EUR 562.87 million), marking a 19% decrease compared to the corresponding period last year. Operating profit for the quarter plunged to SEK 410 million (approximately EUR 35.26 million) from SEK 2,480 million (approximately EUR 213.28 million) in Q3 2022. The company attributed the decline to the global economic slowdown, resulting in weaker demand and subsequently lower prices for its core products. The ongoing market volatility, marked by sluggish growth, surging inflation, and escalating input costs, continued to create a challenging operating environment.<\/p>\n

\"We are currently navigating through a period of short-term challenges while remaining focused on the long-term opportunities. The Q3 results reflect the adverse market conditions we are contending with, a trend that we anticipate will persist for the foreseeable future. Despite the prevailing situation, our cooperative structure, spanning the entire value chain, lends stability to our position, enabling us to explore strategic investments aimed at bolstering our market standing,\" stated S\u00f6dra's President, Lotta Lyr\u00e5.<\/p>\n

S\u00f6dra's individual business segments also felt the impact of the market headwinds. In the S\u00f6dra Skog business area, the operating profit for the quarter stood at SEK 31 million (approximately EUR 2.67 million), primarily influenced by reduced volumes and increased costs. In the S\u00f6dra Wood business area, the operating profit dropped to SEK 52 million (approximately EUR 4.47 million), driven by lower average delivery prices year-on-year, weakened demand, and elevated saw log prices. S\u00f6dra Cell's operating profit totaled SEK 408 million (approximately EUR 35.11 million), reflecting the impact of lower pulp prices and higher raw material costs. Conversely, S\u00f6dra Innovation reported an operating loss of SEK 16 million (approximately EUR 1.38 million), primarily attributed to diminished returns from shares in associates.<\/p>\n

Setra's Q3 net sales decreased by 10% <\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Setra, another prominent player in Sweden's wood industry, faced similar challenges during the third quarter. The company disclosed an operating profit of SEK 8 million (approximately EUR 689,518) for Q3 2023, with net sales amounting to SEK 1,207 million (approximately EUR 103.88 million), down from SEK 1,343 million (approximately EUR 115.55 million) in Q3 2022.<\/p>\n

Marcus Westdahl, CEO of Setra, commented on the market conditions, stating, \"The wood products market remained challenging during the third quarter. The persistent pressure on earnings can be attributed to the simultaneous rise in raw material prices and decline in sales prices. While demand exhibited favorable trends in the US and Asia, the underlying demand in Scandinavia and Europe continued to remain weak.\"<\/p>\n

Setra's ongoing strategic initiatives, including the construction of a new saw line for small-diameter logs at its Skinnskatteberg sawmill, are expected to fortify the company's growth trajectory, with operations set to commence by spring 2024.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
