There are apparently two reasons for this: the falling wood prices and the good market supply. Heating with pellets is currently significantly cheaper than heating with heating oil or gas.

Pellet prices in Germany continued to fall at the start of the heating season. This means that the lowest price level since May has been reached. However, it does not seem very likely that the previous annual low of 324 euros per ton will be reached again.

“What is certain, however, is that prices have halved compared to the previous year and this ensures continued high demand,” say the experts at Heizpellets24. Pellet prices are still falling - even though the heating season has actually already begun.

One reason for the ongoing decline in the price of pellets is likely to be the sharp fall in the price of wood and wood by-products. The price drop observed there could continue to impact the prices for heating pellets and also keep prices down.

In addition, domestic production continually exceeds domestic demand, say pellet experts.

Pellet prices also fell in October

According to the federal average, wood pellets cost around 346 euros per ton on October 10th, according to the experts at Heizpellet24. That's around 5 euros less than at the beginning of the month and 15 euros less than 4 weeks ago.

Compared to the last price peak at the beginning of July, when pellet prices briefly broke through the 400 euro mark, prices are now 55 euros per ton lower. These are also the lowest pellet prices since the beginning of May : Back then, customers were able to buy wood pellets at similarly low prices as they are now.

Despite the price decline that lasted until the beginning of October, the cheapest shopping time this year was a little further back - that was mid-April. At that time, the average purchase price for wood pellets was 324 euros per ton, a good 22 euros lower than now.

Heating with pellets is the cheapest

The fact that pellet prices have fallen below 350 euros per ton is a huge surprise for many market observers. In Hesse, for example, wood pellets cost less than 340 euros and in Thuringia and Bavaria customers also have to spend significantly less than 345 euros.

Even if pellet prices do not fall back to the level of around 200 euros per ton that prevailed for over a decade until 2021, wood pellets remain very cheap compared to other energy sources , say the experts at Heizpellts24. They calculated that the fuel cost advantage over heating oil increased to around five cents per kWh in September, based on prices in Germany.

For natural gas it is around 3.5 cents. The experts at Heizöl24 use the rule of thumb: One liter of heating oil provides approx. 10 kWh of energy and one kg of wood pellets provides approx. 5 kWh. Or to put it more simply: Two tons of pellets for currently around 650 euros replace 1,000 liters of heating oil for currently around 1,150 euros.

Pellet prices in Germany continue to fall in early October.
