Due to the economic downturn in the construction industry and declining softwood lumber prices, the Austrian sawmill industry has further reduced its output. For example, a facility in Carinthia has suspended its production for two months. However, the stock of fresh softwood logs is below average as roundwood stocks have been consistently depleted.<\/span><\/p>\n

In combination with cautious fresh wood utilization, this has led to a slight increase in demand, reflected in moderate price increases. The leading assortment of spruce A\/C 2b+ is priced between \u20ac80 and \u20ac95 per cubic meter, with most new contracts falling at the upper end of the price range. Provided quantities are swiftly transported, and transport capacities are sufficient. The sales of pine are still challenging, with prices remaining low. Larch sawlogs are also in high demand, mainly due to a lack of deliveries from Russia. The softwood tender in Upper Austria is scheduled for December 4, 2023.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the hardwood season, initial contracts suggest that due to declining demand in interior construction and larger quantities of oak calamities in Croatia, the prices of the previous season cannot be exceeded. Hardwood tenders will take place in Upper and Lower Austria in January 2024. Relevant logs should be reported to the forest advisor or forest assistant before shaping to avoid losses during shaping.<\/p>\n

Industrial Wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

The paper, pulp, and board industry have also adjusted their production volumes in line with the economic situation. Correspondingly, the demand for industrial softwood logs remains subdued. While supply in the damaged areas is delayed, quantities from the significantly reduced normal use are quickly taken over in the rest of the country. With current stagnant prices, the price range varies widely between \u20ac60 and \u20ac100 per metric ton. The price of beech fiberwood has been reduced and ranges between \u20ac80 and \u20ac100 per metric ton.<\/p>\n

Energy Wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

Due to the extremely mild weather until mid-October, the consumption of energy wood has been moderate. Heating plants are mostly well stocked. The demand for high-quality firewood is slightly weaker than last year, which was marked by 'panic buying,' at stable prices.<\/p>\n
