The German wood industry is purchasing significantly lower quantities. Contracts are often quantity-bound, and new prices are frequently negotiated after delivery. However, the inventories of German sawmills are gradually depleting, and the market could stabilize.

The construction industry is experiencing significant declines in incoming orders. Typically, only the existing order backlog is being processed. New orders are scarce.

As there are no noticeable impulses from the export markets, large German sawmills, in particular, are suffering from massive sales problems. Accordingly, the demand for softwood logs is low.

Simultaneously, the sales of pine are only possible with significant price concessions. The paper, board, and pulp industry are also affected by declining sales, and the demand for softwood logs is also low.

The significant decrease in the sale of lumber and the price reductions in recent months have almost brought wood production to a standstill in several regions. Consequently, the timber stocks in many German sawmills have visibly decreased. This could revive demand at least in the medium term and lead to more stable or even slightly firmer prices.

However, there is no sign of this yet. Currently, the German wood industry is planning significant reductions in sawing in response to the declining demand from the construction industry, according to reports from forest owners. Depending on the region, declines of 20 to 30 percent of the normal sawing capacity are reported.

The declining demand for softwood lumber and reduced sawing, coupled with increasing infestation by beetles and storm damage, have put roundwood prices under massive pressure.

Contracts are often quantity-bound, and as soon as the contractually agreed quantities are delivered, new contracts, and often new prices, are negotiated, according to forest owner associations.

Some Germansawmills continue to offer only a mixed price for beetle-infested/D/BC wood. The price situation in the lumber market remains very unclear and varies significantly regionally. Often only daily prices are quoted, according to forest owners.

Predominantly, prices for spruce logs in quality 2b+ are currently offered at 78 to 85 euros/cubic meter, and for beetle-infested wood, prices range from 50 to 65 euros/cubic meter. For spruce D-wood, the few price reports are around 50 to 55 euros per cubic meter.

With the price crash in spruce, the sale of pine has often almost come to a complete standstill. For quality pine logs 2b+, the few price reports range between 50 and 65 euros/cubic meter. For D-qualities, the few price reports are around 50 euros per cubic meter. Prices for pine pallet wood were recently quoted at 55 to 60 euros per cubic meter.

Industrial wood and paper wood under pressure – Firewood prices stable

Some German forest owner associations believe that the bottom may have been reached in terms of spruce prices. This is due to the almost empty wood stocks of many sawmills and the consequently slightly increasing demand. In contrast, the sale of pine wood, if at all, is still only possible with significant price concessions, according to reports.

The sales of the paper, board, and pulp industry are still affected by significant declines in revenue and price pressure. The sustained significant reduction in sawing by the sawmill industry and the significantly lower quantities of sawmill by-products could, however, stabilize the market.

However, prices for softwood logs have continued to fall. The paper wood market is also in a difficult situation. The high energy prices on the one hand and significantly reduced quantities on the other hand are pushing sales possibilities to a very low level.

In addition to weak demand, the continued high energy costs are also playing a role in the board industry. Prices have also fallen significantly here. The demand for energy wood is running at a level typical for the season, with the supply, especially in the damaged areas, larger than usual.

High-quality, ready-to-use firewood, on the other hand, is in high demand. Therefore, firewood prices remain relatively stable.

Wood prices in Germany continue to be under pressure in October.
