Forestry companies warn forest visitors of the danger to life and remind them to pay attention to the path closures. But when it comes to the coming market season for hardwood logs, the tone is also rather serious.

Firewood remains expensive

In recent years, the prices for hardwood logs, especially oak, have risen noticeably every year. As a result of the energy crisis induced by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the prices for firewood and thus also for beech logs went through the roof. The price of firewood will remain high, that is already clear to everyone.

When it comes to valuable wood and sawlogs, things are more differentiated. Stable prices are also expected for valuable wood and high-quality sawn timber, but the lower-quality ranges are falling.

Uncertain market for hardwood

German sawmills and processors speak of full warehouses, both for logs and finished goods. In view of the sluggish global markets, exports are also not expected to have any real effect. The buyer side therefore warns that only the very best qualities should be offered at valuable timber appointments.

This also reflects the experience that even average qualities fetch significantly higher prices at auctions and auctions than in private sales.

There is a risk of the forests being closed

Foresters, especially in eastern Germany, are seriously concerned about the preservation of deciduous forests. The border triangle of Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saxony in particular experiences a massive water deficit due to its location in the rain shadow of the Harz Mountains. And this despite the fact that the year 2023 has been very forest-friendly so far. The result is signs of death in beech and oak as well as in colored hardwoods. The fatal thing is that damage to the wood occurs even when the crown is still green. In the oak there is also a local proliferation of oak seed beetles, which damage the wood throughout the entire trunk

This has two effects: If damage is discovered, the trees must be harvested very quickly in order to still be usable with appropriate added value. Foresters therefore warn to critically examine the felling of fresh hardwood and, if necessary, to cut down damaged wood first. If the harvest is not carried out, it is to be feared that the forests will soon no longer be able to be safely accessed by forest workers or forest visitors due to the amount of dead wood. There is a risk that entire forests will be closed.

Wohlleben's heresies have serious consequences

One therefore looks with suspicion at the fictions of Peter Wohlleben and his followers, which are sold as facts and who uncritically applaud dead wood of any extent, simply wanting to let the forest be a forest and not caring about the consequences. The most recent example is the proposal by some environmental organizations to amend the Federal Forest Act.

Such aberrations wouldn't be so bad if they weren't also heard by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, which has been blocking the adoption of the Federal Forest Act for months, as family farms and forestry complain.

Hope bioeconomy

As difficult as the classic hardwood market is, there is so much hope in the bioeconomy. Here, industrial wood is chemically broken down and processed into chemical products. On the one hand, this creates a market for future forests that will be significantly richer in hardwood than today. To date, low-quality hardwood ranges have often ended up as firewood due to a lack of alternatives on the market.

Given the volume requirements at stake in the chemical industry, it is already clear to many people that an adequate supply of raw materials will become an issue at some point.

After years of upward trend, players in the German hardwood market now expect stable development at best.
