<\/span>Due to weak demand, Stora Enso has decided to stop production at the Bad St. Leonhard sawmill in Austria for two months from December.<\/p>\n

The construction industry is losing orders in Austria, but also internationally. Added to this are the effects of the war in Ukraine on the energy and financial markets. This interaction has a correspondingly negative impact on the order situation in the wood industry. The Stora Enso sawmill has now announced that it is temporarily halting production at the Bad St. Leonhard plant due to weak demand, the reduction of inventories and increased costs.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the months of December 2023 and January 2024 are planned as a production break.<\/p>\n

The cross-laminated timber factory continues to produce<\/strong><\/p>\n

The majority of the 120 affected out of a total of 285 employees work in the sawmill and planing mill. Production is continuing in the cross-laminated timber factory due to the current order situation. A restructuring process is also underway within the company to ensure the profitability and competitiveness of the location, which was founded in 1999 and was affected by a major fire in 2022. As Bartl emphasizes, Stora Enso is convinced that after the winter lull, the demand for wood will increase again in the spring and that all hiring guarantees can be met.<\/p>\n

Construction industry is weakening<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wood dealer Bruno Ruhdorfer from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce: \u201cThe construction industry is weakening - and so are we. It is currently not possible to cover costs with fresh wood. The price is on the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Finnish-Swedish company Stora Enso has global sales of 11.8 billion euros. They say they are convinced that things will pick up again as soon as the problems in the energy and financial sectors are resolved.<\/p>\n

Bad St. Leonhard unit<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bad St. Leonhard unit in southern Austria produces sawn timber, processed timber and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), primarily for the construction industry.
