In particular, the demand for softwood lumber is expected to drop drastically because the construction industry is freezed both in Finland and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\"Next year, the demand for the products of the chemical forest industry will recover slightly, but the wood products industry is facing another year of weak demand,\" sums up forest economist Matti Valonen.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the reduced demand, the prices of the end products of the Finnish forest industry have decreased, which has weakened the profitability of the companies.\u00a0Production costs have been increased by the increase in wood prices and wages.\u00a0The price of electricity has decreased, but at the same time it reduces the electricity sales income of forest companies.<\/p>\n<p>The economic sanctions against Russia have contributed to the increase in wood prices.\u00a0In addition, the import of Russian forest industry products to the European market has ended.\u00a0At the same time, Russian companies have increased their exports to other market areas and tightened competition in them.<\/p>\n<p>The combined nominal value of the Finnish forest industry exports will decrease by 16 percent this year compared to last year.\u00a0The biggest decline is seen in wood products and cardboard, the least is pulp.<\/p>\n<p>\"The situation has already led to the closing of factories or production lines, and there may be more to come at the end of the year and next year.\u00a0Layoffs are also seen at sawmills and possibly in the plywood industry,\" Valonen estimates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian softwood lumber tightens competition in markets important to Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The decrease in construction has decreased the demand for lumber, as a result of which the export and production of Finnish lumber will decrease by about a tenth this year. Due to weak demand, a significant part of Finnish sawmills will have to resort to layoffs this fall and winter.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, a lot of investments in sawmills have been made in Finland, and the capacity will increase further this year and next year. Companies are concentrating their production on their new production lines, and the downsizing of older sawmills is not excluded.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of Russian wood products somewhat balances the market situation in Finland and Europe.
