Austrian representatives from the forestry, wood and energy industries warn of chaos due to the lack of implementation of the EU's RED II directive.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to photovoltaic, wind and hydroelectric power plants, energy production from biomass plays a crucial role in Austria on the path to a renewable and independent energy future.<\/p>\n

Austria is not prepared for RED II<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since biomass is also imported into Europe and not all member states have as strict forestry laws as Austria, the European Union provided evidence for forest biomass in Directive (EU) 2018\/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II). on sustainable forestry is mandatory. In the future, this will require the certification of all forest biomass that is used as an energy source in larger heating plants.<\/p>\n

A corresponding transition period in national legislation expires at the end of the year. The problem is that there is currently no system for administrative processing and a sufficient range of certification bodies in Austria.<\/p>\n

There is a risk of a cost explosion for heating customers<\/strong><\/p>\n

At a round table in Heiligenkreuz in the summer, representatives from the Austrian forestry industry, the wood processing industry, the wood trade and energy suppliers discussed this. It was agreed that close cooperation between political decision-makers and the relevant actors is necessary in order to be able to meet the European Union's requirements in a timely manner. For Ing. Gerhard Sacher, Managing Director of EVN Hitze GmbH, speed is of the essence. If no solutions are found, domestic biomass will no longer be considered renewable and will be equivalent to fossil fuels in terms of CO2 emissions. For heating plant operators with a fuel heat output greater than 20 megawatts, this means that emissions certificates would have to be purchased at high cost. There is a risk of financial damage amounting to millions, which would have to be passed on to customers.<\/p>\n

Excessive bureaucracy would stifle the energy transition<\/strong><\/p>\n

Forest biomass is one of the essential cornerstones of renewable energies and is absolutely necessary for the implementation of a successful bioeconomy, explains Franz Kirnbauer, chairman of the trade division and the Lower Austrian wood industry in the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n

The use of synergies with the urgently needed forest care is the order of the day. Excessive and impractical bureaucratic requirements would undermine both the achievement of energy goals and the adaptation of forests to climate change.<\/p>\n

Problems in distant countries should not be transferred to Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n

DI Felix Montecuccoli, President of Land & Forest Companies Austria, explains: \u201cWe have been working sustainably for centuries based on our strict forestry laws. Almost the entire Austrian forest area is also certified according to PEFC. No additional certifications may be necessary.<\/p>\n

Legal certainty and clarity must be created here in order to secure the energetic use of forestry biomass from Austria. We want to continue to be able to use biomass as an important contribution to the climate and energy goals of the Austrian Federal Government and the European Union.
