warns of impact from decommissioning of forest areas through political measures in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On September 26, 2023, on the sidelines of AUSTROFOMA, Austria's largest and internationally renowned forestry trade fair at Stuhleck, Spital am Semmering, the results of the study on the \u201cEconomic Significance of the European Forestry and Wood Industry in the Sense of the Bioeconomy\u201d were published.<\/p>\n<p>The forestry and timber industry makes a significant contribution to Europe's economic stability.\u00a0The importance of the forestry and wood industry for value creation, purchasing power and employment has so far been significantly underestimated.\u00a0In order to assess the Europe-wide importance of the forestry and timber industry, a total of 30 European countries (EU27, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom) were examined comprehensively for the first time.\u00a0The study records, among other things, the total gross value added, which means all direct, indirect and induced effects that can be traced back to the European forestry and wood industry.\u00a0In total this amounts to around 1.1 trillion euros (EU 27, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom).\u00a0Overall, the industry secures around 17.5 million jobs across Europe.\u00a0The study shows<\/p>\n<p>The forestry and wood industry stands for:<\/p>\n<p>Gross value added<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>527 billion euros direct gross value added<\/li>\n<li>3.34% of the total economic output of these 30 European countries<\/li>\n<li>1,114 billion euros (or 1.114 trillion) total gross value added with all direct, indirect &amp; induced effects that can be traced back to the forestry and wood industry.<\/li>\n<li>7.06% of the total economic output of these 30 European countries.<\/li>\n<li>This corresponds approximately to Spain's economic output in 2019<\/li>\n<li>Every 16th euro is generated directly or indirectly by the forestry and wood industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Occupation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7.9 million direct jobs<\/li>\n<li>17.5 million total jobs with all direct, indirect &amp; induced effects that can be traced back to the forestry and timber industry.<\/li>\n<li>This corresponds approximately to the population of the Netherlands in 2020<\/li>\n<li>One in 16 jobs is directly or indirectly linked to the forestry and wood industry<\/li>\n<li>For every job in the forestry and wood industry, an additional 1.2 jobs are created or secured in the overall economy.<\/li>\n<li>On average, 6% of employees in the 30 European countries are employed directly or indirectly by the forestry and wood industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The decommissioning of forest areas through political measures, for example, would have serious consequences for economic performance and the labor market in Europe.\u00a0A reduction in logging by just 1% would result in a loss of 10.3 billion euros in gross value added and the loss of around 162,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>In Austria, the increasing intensity of value creation in downstream value creation stages (from the forest, to further processing in the wood, paper or board industry) means that from around 67.8 euros in value added in forestry per meter of wood harvested, up to 1,667 euros along the entire value chain can be generated.\u00a0This means that 1 cubic meter of wood from
