It's not easy to predict the direction that oak markets will take in late 2023. The early sales in September already provide some hints, but these require confirmation. The context has significantly evolved since the beginning of 2022 when oak sawyers were experiencing a state of euphoria. <\/span>Now, economic signals are gloomy in major global marketplaces: the US economy is uncertain, China's real estate sector is struggling, and Europe, notably its economic engine, Germany, is on the brink of recession (with GDP forecasts ranging from -0.2% to -0.4% for 2023).<\/p>\n

Some of these disruptions are now affecting the oak industry. One example is parquet, which has seen a significant drop in activity in Europe over the past year, with an average decline of 20% in the EU, including -12% in France and -30% in Germany (year-on-year figures as of the end of June 2023). In France, while the renovation-extension sector is holding steady, the same cannot be said for new construction; building permits have plummeted by 16% year-on-year by the end of the first half of 2023. This has consequences on furniture purchases and, subsequently, on certain oak assortments. It's not surprising that demand is waning, and prices are starting to significantly decline in forests for small-diameter products and second-choice materials destined for veneers and friezes. Moreover, the landscape beam market has slowed down, and the costliness of structural timber has cooled consumer interest considerably.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of September, at the ONF sale in Ch\u00e2tenoy-le-Royal (Sa\u00f4ne-et-Loire), formerly known as the grand Beaune sale, prices for these assortments dropped by 10% to 15% year-on-year (see table below). In raw figures, without considering quality variables, the average price of oaks has decreased by 12% over the past year (sales revenue from the auction compared to the volume sold). Unsold lots have increased to 16% of the volume listed in the catalog (compared to 2.5% unsold in autumn 2022). The number of bids per lot has shown a downward trend: an average of 6.7 submissions per article sold a year ago compared to 5.2 today. However, high-quality logs with large diameters have not experienced notable price fluctuations. According to R\u00e9gis Anglaret, the head of hardwoods at ONF Bourgogne Franche-Comt\u00e9, \"Cuttings offering high-quality wood have been negotiated at prices comparable to those of 2022.\"<\/p>\n

The French market for timber remains positive, and the demand for oak stave wood appears very dynamic, with a highly active cooperage sector (a 27% increase in revenue year-on-year as of the end of March 2023). However, coopers are concerned \"about no longer being able to fairly access the oak stave wood market.\" The French Oak Merchants' Union and the French Cooperage Federation have recently expressed their concern about not being involved in the negotiations that led to the extension of the \"oak\" agreement between ONF and FNB. This agreement stipulates that supply contracts are reserved for sawmills, depriving stave wood producers and coopers of a portion of their raw material. This situation, which could create pricing tensions, may partly explain why prices for high-quality timber remain stable.<\/p>\n

Another determining factor in the oak market's evolution comes from Asia. David Roy, Director of DHSwood France, explains that the landscape in China has changed significantly. \"The frenzy of purchases at any price and without quality limits from two years ago is behind us. The 2023 season was very short in China, and Chinese sawmills piled up stocks of low-quality lumber, while demand for parquet flooring suddenly dropped due to the real estate crisis.\" According to this specialist, we should, therefore, expect limited purchases in terms of volume and price from Chinese importers, who will be much more selective in quality. In these conditions \u2013 reduced demand for second-choice products, high activity but limited supply in high-quality items \u2013 one might wonder if oak is not heading towards a two-speed market characterized by continually high prices for fine wood and a severe drop in prices for lower-quality products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
