{"id":86800,"date":"2023-09-26T08:01:52","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T08:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/chinas-softwood-lumber-imports-rebound-in-q2-2023-ending-years-of-decline\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T17:26:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T17:26:48","slug":"chinas-softwood-lumber-imports-rebound-in-q2-2023-ending-years-of-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/chinas-softwood-lumber-imports-rebound-in-q2-2023-ending-years-of-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s softwood lumber imports rebound in Q2 2023, ending years of decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img width=\"640\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63-1024x533.jpeg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63-1024x533.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63-300x156.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63-768x400.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63-1536x800.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lumber-63.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>China's softwood lumber imports showed growth in the second quarter after reversing years of sharp decline in early 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In the second quarter, China's shipments from foreign suppliers climbed to 5.05 million cubic meters, up 20% from the same three months in 2022 and the highest total since the third quarter of 2021 (see chart).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33727\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/china-80.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33727\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-33727 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/china-80-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/china-80-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/china-80.jpg 687w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-33727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">China\u2019s softwood lumber import volume (2022-2023)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Data show that China's softwood lumber imports in the first half of the year reached 9.47 million cubic meters, an increase of 15% from 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this, China's softwood imports had been declining for more than a decade.\u00a0According to statistics, compared with 2020, shipments will drop by 10% in 2022 and 23% in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Data analysis shows that in the first quarter of this year, Europe and Russia were the main driving forces for China's 9% increase in softwood imports, while North American suppliers continued to lose market share in China.<\/p>\n<p>However, the United States and Canada rebounded in the second quarter after falling sharply from January to March and took the opportunity to achieve modest growth in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Data show that in the first half of the year, China\u2019s imports from Russia reached 5.9 million cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 6%.<\/p>\n<p>Due to sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russia, the export of Russian softwood lumber to the West has been hindered, and these timber have to find other markets.\u00a0China itself is Russia's largest foreign market for softwood lumber, and China's demand for softwood lumber continues to rise, making Russian softwood lumber account for an increasing share of the Chinese market.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, European softwood lumber exports to China increased by 42% year-on-year in the first half of the year, reaching 2.14 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n<p>In the first half of the year, Russia and Europe together accounted for 85% of China's total imports, the same share as the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Data show that in the first half of the year, Canadian softwood exports to China reached 732,345 cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 3%. The main species are western spruce and pine.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. softwood lumber exports to China increased by 33% to 80,795 cubic meters.<\/p>\n<p>China's imports of radiata pine also increased significantly in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Shipments from New Zealand more than doubled to 104,979 cubic meters;<\/p>\n<p>Deliveries from Chile surged 45% to 218,045 cubic meters.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China&#8217;s softwood lumber imports showed growth in the second quarter after reversing years of sharp decline in early 2023.
