This means that the price of pellets has halved compared to the previous year. The downward price curve, which is unusual for this time of year, can still be traced back to the energy crisis last year. The cost of one kilowatt hour (kWh) of heat from pellets is 7.65 cents, which means a price advantage of 34 percent compared to heating oil and around 28 percent compared to natural gas.

“The heating season is now just around the corner, so the filling level of the pellet storage should be checked now,” explains Martin Bentele, managing director of DEPI. At the current price level, he recommends stocking up now for the winter. “As we saw when prices peaked last year, trading is the bottleneck in pellet supply. It therefore makes sense for private consumers to order pellets when larger consumers order less.”

Regional prices

Regional price differences are as follows in September 2023 (with a purchase quantity of 6 tons): In central Germany, the average pellet costs are 380.29 euros/t, followed by southern Germany at 382.34 euros/t. In northern and eastern Germany, pellets are slightly more expensive with a ton price of 383.84 euros. For larger purchase quantities (26 tons) the following conditions apply in September 2023: South: 369.29 euros per ton, Central: 362.12 euros per ton, North/East: 361.49 euros per ton (all prices including VAT).

The price of wood pellets fell for the third month in a row in September.
