The federal government has now published a forecast of the costs of various energy sources for the next 12 years.

Wood pellets remain cheap

Wood pellets perform very well over this period with an average price of 8.58 ct/kWh.

According to the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV), pellets are by far the cheapest compared to all other listed energy sources such as biomethane, district heating, natural gas and heat pumps.

According to a forecast by the Federal Ministry of Economics, pellets will remain a permanently inexpensive source of energy, hand in hand with heat pumps On closer inspection, however, this statement cannot be maintained. The graphic provided by DEPV already shows that the heat pump with pellets is on par with the forecast, apart from a few cents per kilowatt hour.

Heat pump practically the same

The experts from DEPV divided the average forecast electricity price in the heat pump tariff by the efficiency factor (coefficient of performance, COP or annual performance factor, JAZ) of 3.5. This factor indicates how many units of heat a heat pump generates from one unit of electricity. According to a report by the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center from May 2023, air-source heat pumps are currently working with an average of 2.8 (maximum 4.7), geothermal heat pumps with an average of 3.5 (man. 5.2) and groundwater heat pumps with an average of 3.8 (max .6.4). A heat pump with an AC of 3 is currently considered uneconomical.

The factor of 3.5 is therefore definitely in the currently realistic range. According to the forecast data, heat pumps would already be cheaper than pellets with a factor of 4, and it can be assumed that the efficiency of heat pumps will increase steadily. The Federal Ministry of Economics, which prepared the forecast, qualifies that these forecast figures are subject to a large element of uncertainty. One does not know what market distortions we will face in the future.

Pellets independent of the electricity price

This could in turn speak for wood pellets. Because while the heating costs with the heat pump depend heavily on the electricity price in addition to the efficiency of the device, pellets are largely independent of this.

DEPV Managing Director Martin Bentele explains: "Even if the price for pellets rose sharply in the last year due to the energy price distortions caused by the war of aggression against Ukraine, it is usually only subject to slight seasonal price fluctuations, which are mostly caused by the construction industry to be influenced. As a climate-friendly fuel, however, they are independent of CO2 prices and free from the influence of speculation.”

Supply of pellets secured

For years, Germany has been the European leader in pellet production and a regular net exporter. Around 3.6 million t were produced in the previous year. According to Bentele, the climate-related conversion of forests towards more mixed stands in the coming decades will lead to a continued high supply of residual wood as the basis for pellet production. The federal government has confirmed this with its statements on the reliability of the pellet price up to the year 2035.

According to a forecast by the Federal Ministry of Economics, wood pellets will remain cheap in Germany until 2035.
