The prices for round and sawn timber fell up to 47 percent. The Tyrolean timber industry is also struggling with falling demand while warehouses are full.

As with food or energy, wood and thus the wood prices of the domestic wood industry are tied to the world market. And he's going through a downward spiral. The prices for both round timber and sawn timber have fallen sharply, demand is falling and there is an oversupply of wood, said the spokesman for the Tyrolean timber industry, Helmut Troger.

World market economy pulls prices down

The reasons given are the declining construction industry and a weaker industry. The stricter lending guidelines would have slowed down the construction industry, so less timber would be needed. On the other hand, with lower production, the industry needs less packaging material, which is often made of wood.

Helmut Troger told ORF Tirol: "At the moment there is no market in the world where you could say it's going well or it's even booming. As a result, there is too much sawn timber on the market worldwide. We all have to cut production to get prices under control again.”

Full camps are accompanied by windthrow

There is currently an oversupply of wood and the warehouses are full. The wind throw after the storms of the past weeks do the rest, even if you can still use the damaged wood, said Troger: “Of course, these wind throws come at the wrong time. But you have to remove the damaged wood quickly so that there is no excessive infestation with bark beetles.”

Logs can still be made from trees that have been uprooted by the storm. Those trees that have been snapped can be processed into wood chips and then into chipboard, Troger explained.

Consumers still don't notice much

As in many other areas, the low prices are not immediately felt by consumers: the price of firewood, for example, has only fallen slightly. This in turn is justified by the high energy prices.

Although the prices for pellets have also fallen back somewhat after a peak, they are by far not as strong as the wood prices on the world market.

After price records in the pandemic years 2020/2021, the sales markets for wood in Austria have literally collapsed in the current year.
