The beginning of the year in Finland's wood market was quite busy.\u00a0The prices of wood have also increased in real terms, while the volume of trade has also increased.\u00a0However, the end product market of the Finnish forest industry has been affected by falling demand and prices, and there have been announcements of layoffs and factory closings.\u00a0This raises questions about how the wood trade market will develop by the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n In the end product market, the development of the wood products industry and the pulpwood industry at the beginning of the year has partly diverged.\u00a0In January-April, the export volumes of pulp and paper were clearly higher than last year, and the export of softwood lumber slightly smaller.\u00a0However, it must be remembered that at the beginning of last year, the strikes in Finland reduced production and exports.<\/p>\n According to the forecast of\u00a0Pellervo Economic Research (PTT), the price development will stabilize towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The prices of softwood lumber have decreased by around one hundred euros from last year, but the prices of pulpwood industry products have risen.\u00a0However, the April price increases in the pulp, paper and cardboard market were only of a few percents, so in real terms their prices also fell compared to April last year.\u00a0The May-June statistics will reveal how much prices will fall towards the end of the year due to the darker economic outlook.<\/p>\n In the Finnish timber market, the vertical trade volume of private forests was 75 percent higher in January-May than at the same time last year.\u00a0However, in May, the weekly timber trade volumes started to decrease compared to previous years, according to the weekly statistics of Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry.\u00a0It seems that the wood trade will slow down towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n If the timber trade volumes will decrease, what does the price trend look like in the timber market?\u00a0The nominal average carrying price for January-May was 14\u201322 percent higher than last year with subsidies.\u00a0The increase in the price of softwood reached about 40 percent.\u00a0At the end of May, however, the prices of softwood logs started to decrease, according to Mets\u00e4teollisuus ry's weekly prices.\u00a0According to the forecast, the price development will stabilize towards the end of the year.<\/p>\n In addition to investments in the mass industry, the development of softwood prices is supported by the decline in Russian wood imports.\u00a0The import of timber is almost entirely aimed at the wood needed by the pulpwood industry.\u00a0This year, only half of the amount of wood that was imported in January-April 2021 has been imported.\u00a0Although wood imports have increased from Estonia, Sweden and Latvia, imports are being replaced by domestic wood, which is reflected in wood trade volumes and pulpwood prices despite the weakening demand in the end product market.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The beginning of the year in Finland’s wood market was quite busy.\u00a0The prices of wood have also increased in real terms, while the volume of trade has also increased.\u00a0However, the end product market of the Finnish forest industry has been … Continue reading \n
