Sales prices of softwood lumber have generally declined.

A partial bright spot for sawmills was determined by high by-products prices through the winter. While 2022 was a difficult year, there was a feeling of damage limitation at times for many sawmills – production declined by 4% across the European Organization of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) countries which is negative but could have been worse. In Sweden, the second largest producer of EOS, production declined by just 1%. As consumption in Europe sharply declined the sector limited damage thanks to strong performances in overseas markets – in particular in the United States, but not only: the Chinese market also exceeded expectations.

There are now signs of slowdown overseas but it remains to be seen how the market will develop in the second part of the year.

Availability of raw materials is declining, particularly across Central Europe: the beetle-damaged wood was much less abundant than in previous years. In the Nordics instead availability of logs is still generally evaluated as medium or medium-high, with the exception of Finland. The supply of logs will be an issue which will dominate the markets in coming years.

But the industry is still looking to the future with optimism: almost all EOS Members have reported capacity increases in their respective countries.

With a projected production of 24.4 million m3 in 2022 (-3.7% vs 2021) Germany remains the largest softwood lumber producer within the EOS community.
