After two years of good economic situation, Polish wood processors are facing weakening demand and intensified cost pressure, resulting not only from increases in raw material prices, but also energy prices<\/span> (which is particularly severe for producers of wood-based panels, whose share of energy in costs is higher than the industry average ) and payroll costs. High inflation has a limiting effect on the activity on the construction market, it also reduces consumer spending on durable consumer goods (including furniture). However, we do not expect a further sharp decline in demand.<\/p>\n Poland's wood industry is still favored by:<\/p>\n 1) growing popularity of wooden construction;<\/p>\n 2) planned investments in thermal modernization of buildings (generating demand for windows and doors),<\/p>\n 3) the long-term trend of replacing products with a high carbon footprint with products of natural origin. Along with the revival of the situation on the housing market, the demand for wood products and furniture should recover.<\/p>\n The risk for domestic processors is the resignation from FSC certification by the State Forests. The popularity of the FSC CoC certificate among Polish processors is greater than that of the PEFC CoC certificate, which is the result of recipients' expectations. Polish companies occupy an important place in the supply chain of the IKEA network, which requires FSC certification. A beneficial solution for industries related to wood processing in Poland would be for the State Forests to maintain both certificates confirming sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n In the longer term, Poland's timber market will be affected by the EU Deforestation Regulation . The new law will enter into force at the end of 2024 and will mean a ban on imports into the EU of products that resulted from or contributed to deforestation after 31\/12\/2020, including wood and wood industry products (including furniture). Companies placing such products on the EU market will have to submit a due diligence declaration regarding the verification of the origin of the raw material used for production.<\/p>\n The provisions of the EU biodiversity 2030 strategy and the forest strategy, according to which 30% of the EU land area is to be protected and 10% under strict protection, will also be important.
