German Group Ziegler Holzindustrie GmbH is in the final stages of acquiring the largest timber factory in Romania from HS Timber Group, formerly known as Holzindustrie Schweighofer. The transaction, whose value has not been specified, was announced on April 14, 2023.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, the Romanian Competition Council initiated an analysis because it involves an economic concentration. The German company specializes in timber cutting, planing, and is part of the Ziegler Group, which operates in various industries, including wood processing, logistics, wooden house construction, timber trade, engineering, decorations, gastronomy\/hotel industry, and media.<\/p>\n
In 2022, the Germans had total sales of over 1 billion euros. They went shopping outside of Germany last year when they acquired two timber factories in Sweden. With these acquisitions, the German company, founded in Bavaria, increased its capacity by 700,000 cubic meters per year. In 2023, they are expanding their production by over 1 million cubic meters annually. The German company was founded in 1948 by Ludwig Ziegler and has remained in the family to this day.<\/p>\n
The Austrian company HS Timber Productions Sebes, formerly known as Holtzindustrie Schweighofer, is involved in wood processing and is the largest company in Romania in terms of timber production. The transaction also involves the assets related to the operation of a biomass thermal power plant of HS Timber Productions Reci SRL, located in Covasna County.<\/p>\n
In Romania, HS Timber Productions operates in two timber factories in Sebes and Reci, as well as a panel factory in Comanesti, employing a total of approximately 2,400 employees. \"In accordance with the provisions of Competition Law no. 21\/1996, this operation is an economic concentration that needs to be authorized by the Competition Council. The competition authority will evaluate this economic concentration to determine its compatibility with a normal competitive environment and will issue a decision within the timeframes provided by law,\" stated the Competition Council.<\/p>\n
