The triggers are the construction crisis and a recession. The decline in wood prices comes as a surprise to many German forest owners, as prices actually rose slightly in the first quarter. But now the market is tipping.

The demand for sawn timber is stagnating and prices are going down, German forest owner associations have been reporting since May. In June, the problems seem to be getting worse. In June 2023, the wood price for the leading range BC Spruce 2b+ logs fell below the mark of 100 euros per m3 in many regions for the first time in a long time. On average, prices of 95 to 105 euros/m³ are still being quoted. Compared to the wood prices of the 1st quarter of 2023, the prices have fallen by 10 to 15 euros per cubic metre.

Until March, the prices for spruce logs rose and climbed to a new all-time high, according to the official statistics. After that, however, prices went down faster and faster. And there is no end in sight to the fall in prices.

The German forest owners' associations are also reporting sharp price reductions for pine logs. Prices in June are mostly between 75 euros and 80 euros/m3. However, according to reports from forest owners' associations, most German sawmills expect the difficult sales situation to continue in the coming months. That could lead to further price corrections .

The sales situation for pulpwood and energy wood has recently deteriorated noticeably. Prices in this segment are also dropping significantly in some cases. Apparently, the warehouses of the industry are well stocked with both industrial and sawlogs. The faltering sales of sawn timber and the clearly growing sawn timber stocks in many places are noticeably curbing the demand for softwood sawlogs. Some German forest owners report that sales of pine have even come to a complete standstill in some regions.

And the situation is not getting any better against the background of the massive construction crisis, according to most forest owner associations. Rather the opposite. The Handelsblatt Research Institute (HRI) expects German economic output to decline by 0.7 percent this year. With these growth rates, Germany ranks last in a European comparison. "We assume that overall economic output will fall noticeably this year," says financial market analyst Dennis Huchzermeier in the podcast.

Construction industry in crisis - economy collapses

The German paper and pulp industry is also apparently well stocked with industrial roundwood. Reduced production, temporary delivery stops and announced production interruptions are also dampening demand and putting pressure on prices. For forest owners, the difficult sales situation results in additional delays in removal from the forest, which in turn leads to the further construction of forest camps. The demand for energy wood has also declined due to seasonal factors.

Following the course of the price of industrial logs, the prices were also reduced significantly in some cases. At the same time, the lower prices for sawmill by-products such as wood chips and wood pellets are now having an impact on the sawmills' offer prices. How long the prices can stay at the current level also depends on the further development of the beetle wood situation. – The situation in the construction industry is certainly the most difficult – which is enormously important for the timber market (construction timber) and timber prices.

Analysts say the construction industry is slipping deeper into a crisis, triggered by inflation and interest rate hikes . Higher interest rates and inflation have caused purchasing power and thus demand to collapse. According to estimates by the German Federal Statistical Office, builders are no longer interested in some approved construction projects.

According to experts, the heating debate has also led to a "considerable loss of confidence and strong reluctance on the part of builders and investors". The industrial union for construction, agriculture and the environment (IG BAU) has warned of a decade-long crisis and job cuts in view of the stagnant housing construction.

"The crash in construction capacities is happening very quickly: the reduction in construction workers is running six times faster than the increase in staff," said IG-Bau boss Robert Feiger to the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Wood prices are falling significantly in Germany.
