The demand for Finland's forest industry products on the world market will remain sluggish this year, which can be seen in the decrease in production and export volumes and especially in the decrease in export prices. The general situation in the economic bulletin describes the uncertainties caused by the situation in Ukraine, inflation, energy availability, and the rise in interest rates.<\/p>\n
Export prices are falling, but from a high level. It is predicted that the production and export of lumber from Finland will decrease by 2\u20133 percent and the export price by about a quarter compared to last year. New sawmill capacity is being completed, and the operating rates of the Finnish sawmills are expected to remain low.<\/p>\n
The production and export of plywood are also predicted to decrease, but the average export price will slightly strengthen from last year.<\/p>\n
During the spring, pulp prices have fallen sharply in both China and Europe. The price of pulp exported from Finland is significantly lower than last year's peak prices, but compared to many previous years, the price is still high. Pulp production will increase by four percent, and export by 16 percent from last year.<\/p>\n
In addition to the general economic situation, the demand for cardboard, paper, and pulp is weakened by the unloading of accumulated customer inventories. The export and production of cartons will clearly decrease this year compared to last year, despite the increase in production capacity. The average export price of all types of cardboard will decrease by five percent this year.<\/p>\n
Despite the decrease in paper prices, the average export price remains high. Paper export and production volumes are increasing from last year, which was marked by UPM's labor struggles.<\/p>\n
Total felling volumes remain unchanged. It is predicted that the felling of industrial wood will decrease by only one percent from last year to 63 million cubic meters, as Russian imported wood is replaced by domestic wood and domestic production capacity increases.<\/p>\n
After the Finnish sawmill industry's business cycle has weakened, the felling of logs will decrease by six percent to 27 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n
Due to the growing production of pulp and paper and the replacement of Russian birch fiber wood and wood chips, fiber wood cuttings will increase by three percent from last year to almost 37 million cubic meters. The import of raw wood to Finland will decrease by 10 percent to 4.3 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n
A year of solid growth in nominal carrying prices. Although the export prices of sawn timber have fallen rapidly, the high total raw wood procurement volumes and investments increase the carrying prices of softwood logs by 5\u20137 percent. The good demand for sheet plywood raises the carrying price of birch logs by 20 percent.<\/p>\n
Due to scarcity, the prices of softwood logs are predicted to rise by as much as 23\u201330 percent.<\/p>\n
The demand and price of domestic energy wood will also continue to rise as the previous imported energy is replaced. The average installation price of wood chips is expected to rise by 5\u20137 percent.<\/p>\n
