Mercer International Inc. has received Bankruptcy Court approval for the acquisition of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation and its subsidiaries.<\/span> The acquisition includes the Conway Facility in Arkansas, USA, and production facilities in British Columbia, Canada, for a total of $81.1 million (excluding fees and expenses). The transaction is expected to be completed soon, subject to customary conditions.<\/p>\n The Conway Facility is a modern manufacturing plant built in 2021. It has an annual capacity of approximately 75,000 m3 and produces glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT). With over 280,000 square feet of manufacturing space, it is strategically located in the Southern United States, providing access to growing construction markets and a large regional wood supply.<\/p>\n The acquisition also includes three facilities in British Columbia, Canada, with a combined annual capacity of around 40,000 m3 of glulam and CLT.<\/p>\n The addition of glulam production capability through this transaction expands Mercer's existing mass timber offering. Glulam is an engineered wood product made up of bonded wood laminations and is commonly used for support structures in construction. It offers customization, pre-fabrication, high strength-to-weight ratio, logistical efficiencies, and a smaller carbon footprint compared to materials like steel and concrete.<\/p>\n Juan Carlos Bueno, President and CEO of Mercer, stated that the acquisition aligns with their strategy to expand and diversify their product mix in the solid wood segment and enhance their mass timber business. The acquisition will significantly increase production capacity and solidify Mercer's position as a leading producer of mass timber products. Bueno also emphasized the potential synergies between the acquired assets and their existing Mercer Mass Timber facility in Washington.<\/p>\n Bueno expressed confidence in the market potential for CLT and glulam in North American construction, highlighting the modernity of their mass timber facilities and their commitment to a circular carbon economy through sustainable forest products.
