Unlike softwoods, the hardwood markets do not yet seem to be very affected by the current deterioration in economic activity in general and by the poor construction figures in France in particular.\u00a0This is one of the conclusions that can be drawn after the last public sales of this spring 2023.<\/p>\n

The remark is particularly true for the ash tree, which is currently experiencing unprecedented popularity.\u00a0\"I have never experienced such demand and with such high prices<\/em>\u00a0,\" observes Michel Jacquin, logger for forty years in the east and manager of Bois 39, a Sarl specializing in the trading of hardwoods.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to him, B\/C quality ash logs, which were sold on the basis of 100 euros to 110 euros\/m3 in the fall of 2022, are now going for the price of 160 euros\/m3 (see also tables 1 and 2).\u00a0R\u00e9gis Anglaret, wood sales manager at the ONF of Bourgogne Franche-Comt\u00e9, confirms the current fever for ash.\u00a0\u201cIn one year and in our region, average roadside prices have gone from 115 euros\/m3 to 160 euros\/m3.\u00a0The annual increase is therefore<\/em>\u00a0around 40%.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is essentially the result of the dynamism of export markets with demand that has exploded in Vietnam, a country in which furniture factories have returned to production at full capacity after a sudden halt in 2021 and on the first part by 2022. Indonesia and, to a lesser extent, Tunisia are also contributing to making ash the flagship species of the moment. <\/span><\/p>\n

In beech, demand remains generally satisfactory.\u00a0While flows to China slowed down last winter, the Maghreb remains in demand with Morocco as the main destination (but especially in steamed wood C quality and at rock bottom prices).\u00a0However, in an end-of-season market, log prices fell by around 10% year-on-year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beech trees, which sold for an average of 80-85 euros\/m3 along the road at the start of 2022, are trading this spring at around 75 euros\/m3.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, for oak two clear trends are emerging.\u00a0In top-of-the-range assortments, prices over 1 year are stable or even progressing.\u00a0This is the case for staves, the average price of which is now close to \u20ac1,000\/m3, with maximums that can almost reach \u20ac1,500\/m3 in renowned public forests in central and western France.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, secondary quality wood suffers a decrease varying, depending on the case, from 15% to 25% (see table 3).\u00a0At the Burgundy Franche-Comt\u00e9 stakes, logs which were paid on average at 340-350 euros\/m3 roadside in 2022, are now trading around 290-295 euros\/m3.\u00a0At the same time, and at ONF sales in the east, purchase offers fell by an average of 7 bids in 2022 per lot sold, to 5 offers currently.<\/span><\/p>\n
