The Council of the European Union officially approved a regulation aimed at mitigating the risk of deforestation and forest degradation associated with products traded within or exported from the EU market.<\/p>\n
According to the Council's press release, the EU is a significant consumer and trader of commodities that contribute substantially to deforestation. The objective of these new regulations is to ensure that the consumption and trade of these commodities within the EU do not contribute to deforestation or further degradation of forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n
The regulation imposes mandatory due diligence requirements on all operators and traders involved in the placement, availability, or export of palm oil, cattle, wood, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and soy within the EU market. The rules also extend to various derived products, including chocolate, furniture, print paper, and specific palm oil-based derivatives.<\/p>\n
Operators will be obligated to trace the origin of the commodities they sell back to the specific plot of land where they were produced. Simultaneously, the regulations aim to streamline obligations and lessen the administrative burden for operators and authorities, thus avoiding duplication of efforts.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the regulation establishes a cutoff date of December 31, 2020, for the implementation of these new rules.
