Russia and Belarus are being pushed out of world markets as\u00a0timber suppliers. Ukraine aims to take their place.<\/span><\/p>\n The significance of Ukraine's potential in the timber market was highlighted by Rostyslav Shurma, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian President's Office, during a meeting of the working group focused on reforming the forest industry. According to a report by Ukrinform, Shurma expressed the country's aspirations to develop a large and efficient wood products industry. This endeavor aims to significantly increase the production of various wooden goods such as furniture components, MDF, parquet, timber, construction materials, cellulose, paper, and the emerging bioenergy materials sector.<\/p>\n Shurma elaborated on the economic dynamics involved, noting that while a cubic meter of raw timber currently costs approximately $50-100, finished wood products can command prices ranging from $700 to $3,000. To support this ambitious vision, Ukraine intends to augment its annual timber logging volume from the current 13 million cubic meters to 25 million cubic meters. The example of Scandinavian countries, where reforestation is mandatory after every hectare of forest is harvested, serves as an inspiration for this goal.<\/p>\n Establishing order within the forest industry is another crucial objective for Ukraine. This includes the mechanization of logging operations, transitioning from manual to mechanized logging methods, and implementing effective monitoring and control systems to track volumes, enhance productivity, reduce costs, and minimize the need for re-sorting. To achieve these aims, Forests of Ukraine, a single state-run specialized forestry enterprise, will spearhead a comprehensive program of modernization and equipment procurement, as outlined by the Deputy Head of the President's Office.<\/p>\n In September 2022, Forests of Ukraine was established as the legal successor to the property, rights, and obligations of specialized state-owned forestry firms. To further streamline operations, 145 branches of State Forests of Ukraine have been established based on state-run forest farms. These branches will play a vital role in ensuring forest protection, sustainable utilization, and regeneration, while also engaging in commercial activities such as timber sales.<\/p>\n Looking ahead, the state-owned enterprise Forests of Ukraine has already embarked on the development of a new system for monitoring and controlling the circulation of timber.
