Poland's export of softwood logs to China has seen a steep rise in recent times, according to the Polish Chamber of Commerce of the Timber Industry. The first quarter of 2023 is projected to witness the export of over 300,000 cubic meters of softwood logs to China, a record high.<\/span><\/p>\n Market analysts suggest that the sale of wood from Poland to China has grown more than four times compared to 2021, albeit China is only 13th in terms of the value of such exports. The leading recipients of Polish wood are Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, and Sweden.<\/p>\n However, the increased export of softwood logs to China has caused the price of the raw material to go up by as much as 30 percent, affecting the Polish industry. Entrepreneurs from the furniture industry have expressed concern over the massive transportation of wood from Poland, causing a shortage of the material for domestic use. The director of the Polish Chamber of Commerce of the Timber Industry, Rafa\u0142 Szefler, highlighted that everyone except the State Forests stands to lose out due to this increase in exports.<\/p>\n As Szefler point out, the wood is shipped abroad at a rate of 0 percent, and the finished product is produced there, which often returns to Poland, while the local industry faces artificial price hikes. The situation, as Szelfer says, is paradoxical, with wood being cheaper elsewhere but 20-30 percent more expensive in Poland due to the policy of allowing everyone to buy wood in the country.<\/p>\n Polish entrepreneurs have to compete with companies from richer countries to purchase wood, and this ultimately translates into higher product prices for consumers. In contrast, other countries, such as Germany or Sweden, prioritize local companies for purchasing raw materials. In Poland, the principle of \"who will give more\" is the deciding factor, as the Polish Chamber of Commerce of the Timber Industry says.<\/p>\n China's preference for importing wood from Poland can be attributed to the high quality of the raw material and its competitive pricing. In 2020, China was the largest importer of Polish timber, with Germany being the second-largest recipient. Poland ranks seventh in the world in terms of foreign sales of utility wood.<\/p>\n While the State Forests claim that no Chinese company has registered in their sales system, it is an open secret that China has been bypassing this procedure. The State Forests are known for cutting down the Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Forest, and their policies have contributed to the price hike of Polish wood.<\/p>\n Poland sources a significant part of its wood domestically, and 12 percent is exported. In 2021, 5.1 million cubic meters of wood were exported, while 2.4 million cubic meters were imported from abroad.
