Prices for sawlogs in Germany fell slightly in April. The reason is the ongoing price pressure from the timber market. Numerous German forest owners also report very short-term contracts with the sawmills. The reason for this is the great uncertainty about further market and price developments.<\/p>\n

On the market for softwood sawlogs, prices fell slightly in April. However, there is no indication that this will initiate a major correction of the high prices. Nevertheless, many German forest owner associations describe the sales situation as very uncertain and with prices only agreed at very short notice.<\/p>\n

The prices for short timber (2b+ grade B) are mostly around 110 euros per cubic meter (m3). On average, prices of 105 to 115 euros\/m3 are quoted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The prices for spruce sawlogs are just about able to hold their ground. Some German forest owners' associations have reported price reductions of around 5 euros. The prices for short timber (2b+ quality B) are mainly around 110 euros per cubic meter (m3). On average, prices of 105 to 115 euros\/m3 are quoted. Prices between 75 and 85 euros\/sm\u00b3 were paid for beetle wood.<\/p>\n

The forest owners' associations also report price reductions of up to 5 euros for pine logs - the prices in April are mainly between 75 euros and 85 euros\/sm3. The log buyers from the large plants continue to buy very cautiously. Agreements with sawmills are often only valid for very short periods of time. Uncertainty about further price developments remains correspondingly high.<\/p>\n

In a number of regions there were moderate price reductions in April compared to the previous months. The reason: The sale of sawn timber, especially construction timber, is under pressure internationally - and probably also in Europe. In some cases, prices have fallen significantly here and significant production cuts have therefore already been reported. This development can now also be felt on the log market.<\/p>\n

Pressure on prices for pulpwood and energy wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is also pressure from the falling prices on the energy market, i.e. for heating oil, electricity, gas and wood pellets. Other negative factors are the persistently high inflation rates, the continued increase in key interest rates by the central banks and the resulting increase in construction.<\/p>\n

The sales situation is therefore also becoming more difficult for energy and industrial wood. Demand is falling here due to the end of the heating period and the sharp drop in purchases by the paper and fiber industry. As a result, the high prices of recent months have come under pressure.<\/p>\n

German forest owners report that the reduced demand for wood of lower quality not only leads to a regional build-up of forest stocks, but also puts prices under pressure.
