As of the end of February, the prices of Brazilian timber have risen across the board. Prices of Brazilian timber including ip\u00e9, jatoba and red sandalwood are on an upward trend.<\/span><\/p>\n Brazil has recently gone through a new presidential election. Supporters of the former President Bolsonaro attacked the Congress dissatisfied with the election of the current President Lula, which caused a period of turmoil in Brazil and led to continued slack in production in the Brazilian timber industry. Lumber companies have also been reporting exchange rate instability, falling demand in Europe and North America, and selling below cost. At present, the Brazilian government is actively seeking measures to restore the economy, such as seeking to sign a trade agreement with the European Union in mid-2023.<\/p>\n Although Brazil's timber prices are still rising in an all-round way recently, in fact, Brazil's timber exports are actually on a downward trend. In January, the value of exports of Brazilian wood products (excluding pulp and paper) fell by 32%, from $393.9 million to $267.3 million. The export volume of tropical sawn timber fell by 24% from 38,900 cubic meters in January 2022 to 29,500 cubic meters in January 2023; the export value fell by 0.6% from US$15.8 million to US$15.7 million in the same period. Compared with January 2022, the export value of pine plywood in January 2023 fell from 86.3 million US dollars to 56.1 million US dollars, a decrease of 35%; the export volume decreased from 222,200 cubic meters to 189,300 cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 15%. Tropical plywood fell to 18 million cubic meters from 32 million cubic meters in the same period last year, with exports down 44% in volume and 44% in value.<\/p>\n The overall increase in Brazilian timber is partly due to the current President Lula\u2019s promise to crack down on illegal logging and rebuild environmental protection agencies.
