2023 started for Austria's sawmill industry under subdued global economic conditions. In this regard, there are no signs of any change for the second quarter either.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the Austrian wood trade association, for 2023, a reduced production level compared to the previous year is therefore expected. In terms of sales, no seasonal revival of the markets is currently to be expected. In most overseas markets, the Central European sawmills are currently hardly competitive due to the raw material costs.<\/p>\n The supply of logs to the sawmills varied greatly in the first quarter. Despite the mild winter in almost all of Austria, the timber harvest only started very slowly. However, the supply levels are now satisfactory everywhere. The first amounts of damaged wood have already been located and are being processed quickly. The further development of the amount of damaged wood will remain an exciting topic this year.<\/p>\n Sometimes there is a slight drop in demand for certain product ranges. Basically, the framework conditions are rather difficult. Especially in the construction-related area, the indicators point to a more dramatic decline. The new building is suffering from the significantly higher interest rates and the increased construction costs. The furniture industry also continues to find itself in a difficult market environment, but is no longer quite so pessimistic about the situation.<\/p>\n The order situation is therefore tense, especially in the construction sector, but not negative. Due to the time of year and the events of the last few months, the supply of raw materials is in line with expectations and in some areas is even good. The prospects are cautiously positive, which is why there is also further absorption capacity within the framework of the contracts. The necessary storage capacities are available.
