For 2022, the company comparison of the German Timber Trade Federation (GD Holz) shows an increase in sales of 5.6%. The majority of those who took part in the monthly company comparison stated that the sales increases were achieved through price effects and only to a lesser extent through higher sales. The increase in turnover was most evident in the product ranges of board materials with 11% and finishing products (without flooring) with 16%. Other ranges saw an increase in sales, such as flooring with 4% and construction elements with 9%. Lumber (0.5%) and wood in the garden (-2%) were relatively stable.<\/p>\n
Significant differences can also be seen in the sales development of the sales channels via timber wholesalers and timber retailers. The turnover in the wood wholesale trade increased by 5%.<\/p>\n
The expectations of the participants in the company comparison with regard to sales development in the first quarter of 2023 are very cautious in wholesale. The majority (63%) expect lower sales developments than in 2022. This question is answered even more clearly in retail: 80%.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverall, the timber trade can look back on a thoroughly positive year 2022; the expectations for 2023 are moderate, this applies in particular to the timber retail trade. The persistently high energy prices, high inflation and construction interest will burden the construction industry and thus the German timber trade,\" says Thomas Goebel, Managing Director of GD Holz. Interior design and public construction are viewed more positively.
