On March 21, 2023, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture published the annual report on the state of German forests on its website. The latter are suffering with 80% of trees impacted by the effects of climate change, to varying degrees. In particular, the drought and high temperatures of last summer continued to seriously affect the forests.<\/p>\n
The rainy months at the beginning of the year and in autumn could not compensate for the water deficit of the forest soils. Thus, the forest has not been able to recover after the dry years since 2018. The consequences are clearly visible in the trees: in all tree species, a large part of the tree crown is damaged.<\/p>\n
Spruce in particular has suffered from the droughts of recent years, even at well-watered sites and at higher elevations in the low mountain ranges, which were previously considered highly suitable for spruce forest growth. . The vitality of the pine, until now seen as a beacon of hope in climate change, is also suffering. Only 13% of pines are healthy. Deciduous trees (especially beech and oak) also suffer from a lack of rainfall and high temperatures.<\/p>\n
The climate crisis is jeopardizing the important ecosystem services provided by forests. Also, since November 2022, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has been encouraging companies to convert forests: it supports all private and municipal forest owners on the path to climate-adapted forest management.
