A ton of pellets in Austria currently costs around 350 euros. Converted to the kilowatt hour (kWh), wood pellets are cheaper than oil and gas heating. Comparing pellet stoves and heat pumps is more difficult and depends on several factors.

Pellet price: annual average, adjusted for inflation in cents/kg | Status: December 2022

In the previous year there was a boom in heat pumps and wood heating due to the high energy costs. According to the head of the industry association proPellets Austria, Christian Rakos, around half of those who swapped out their heating systems switched to pellet stoves. A total of around 22,000 pellet heating systems were installed in 2022. For this year, Rakos expects a drop to the level of 2021 with around 12,000 heaters. This increase in demand and some panic buying are the reasons for the high prices in the previous year for the industry representative. Rakos has "no indications" of price agreements, as suspected by the Federal Competition Authority (BWB).

Germany: Wood pellets: prices like a year ago

According to a survey by the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), the average current pellet price (gross price for end customers) in Germany in March 2023 is €372.51 per ton (t) of pellets (when purchasing 6 t). This corresponds to costs at a kilo price of 37.25 cents. This means that the prices, which have meanwhile increased significantly, have returned to the level of February / March last year, at least on average across Germany. However, the pellet price development differs in the various regions of Germany.

No one can predict with certainty how energy prices will develop in the coming months. There is even an additional problem with the pellet prices: Should inflation cause major economic problems, the demand for wood – for example for the construction industry – will also decrease. As a result, there are fewer residues in the sawmills that can be processed into pellets.

Nevertheless, Martin Bentele from the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV) gives the all-clear: He does not expect a return to the extremely low prices for which wood pellets were offered before the crisis. However, he does not fear another price explosion either. According to him, the pellet prices per ton should level out between 400 and 500 euros in the long run.

Pellet price evolution in Germany

Month

2022 [€ per ton]

2023 [€ per ton]

January

366.58

499.14

February

373.86

428.52

March

369.32

372.51

April

377.21

May

393.25

June

431.56

July

507.83

August

682.98

September

763.76

October

743.81

November

675.48

December

537.38

After the price shock caused by the energy crisis in 2022, the prices for the wood fuel pellets in Austria and Germany have normalized to some extent.
