From the point of view of Finnish forest owners, the wood market situation in Finland looks promising as the demand for domestic wood is high.\u00a0The need is especially for fiber wood, the demand of which is expected to remain favorable.\u00a0This has been reflected in rising prices, which creates opportunities for forest owners.<\/p>\n
The decrease in Finland's wood imports by almost seven million cubic meters last year has naturally affected the amount of wood supply. This was reflected in the income of forest owners last year, as the nominal gross cash income of private forests rose to a record high of more than 2.4 billion euros.<\/p>\n
The reduced supply has primarily affected the availability of fiber wood.\u00a0With the market situation, there has been enough demand for younger stamps.\u00a0This has increased the targeting of vertical trades mainly to thinning and first thinning sites where pulpwood is collected.\u00a0The lively trade of thinning stamps has also been reflected in the prices of wood species.\u00a0The average price of pulpwood obtained from thinnings has risen more rapidly compared to renewal fellings.<\/p>\n
Regionally, the development of softwood prices has been relatively steady throughout the country.\u00a0In vertical trade, the increase in the average price of softwood fiber has been seen more strongly than average in the price areas of Savo-Karelia, North Ostrobothnia and Kainuu-Koilsmaa.\u00a0The average price of birch fiber also rose in Savo-Karelia more than the rest of the country last year.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, there have been more regional differences in trade volumes of softwood.\u00a0Even though the total number of trades in softwood decreased last year, there has been a demand for softwood especially in Lapland, where the number of vertical trades for fiber clearly increased.\u00a0Also in the Savo-Karjala and Kymi-Savo regions, the trade volumes of softwood in vertical trade rose slightly compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n
In the entire country, the nominal average price of softwood developed more moderately than log wood last year.\u00a0This year, the situation should be the opposite.\u00a0The demand for softwood is expected to strengthen and the price to rise, with a moderate trend in log prices.\u00a0The price of the log is supported by the need for renewal fellings, which in recent years have yielded on average just under half of the total annual accumulation of softwood.<\/p>\n
In the coming years, Finnish forests will have a growing importance in terms of wood supply, which will also benefit forest owners. Nominal gross cash receipts are likely to rise this year due to the favorable development of softwood prices. In terms of the future growth of the tree, the importance of forest management is also increasing.
