There are many indications that a blocking minority or a majority of EU member states will stop the EU Parliament's proposal on restrictions against forest fuels. If the proposal is lifted, it will be a big relief for a couple of hundred Swedish heating plants.<\/p>\n

In a so-called \"non paper\" that Swedish Bioenergy Association (Svebio) has seen, it appears that twelve of the EU's 27 member states do not support the proposal on restrictions against forest fuels. Several hundred Swedish heating plants currently use wood chips as their main fuel and have seen this proposal as a threat to their fossil-free heat production.<\/p>\n

''The EU Parliament's proposal to limit the use of forest chips as felling residues from clearings and thinnings as well as discarded wood, fuel wood, would lead to a large loss of renewable biofuel for our heating and cogeneration plants, as well as for the future production of biofuel. This would result in greatly increased emissions of fossil carbon dioxide. The twelve countries' demand to stop the proposal not only means better climate policy, but also better security of supply for the EU,'' says Svebio's CEO Gustav Melin in a press release.<\/p>\n

The countries behind the paper so far are Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. If the question comes up for a vote, Sweden will probably also join the group, even if Sweden, as the chair country, has refrained from now supporting the letter. Additional member states may join.
