Representatives of the sawmill and timber industry from Germany, Austria and Switzerland met on February 1st in the House of Wood in Berlin for their traditional New Year's meeting. The participants discussed current challenges in the industry, political initiatives from Brussels and decided on closer cooperation and cooperation of their interests in Europe.<\/p>\n
The sawmill and timber industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) is a major economic factor in Europe. But the industry faces many challenges in the coming years. \"I am pleased that, in view of the tasks that lie ahead of us, we have taken a big step forward with a joint cooperation agreement in order to achieve good results for our industry in Europe,\" says the President of the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH), J\u00f6rn Kimmich. The associations decided to work together more closely in terms of personnel in the areas of politics, communication and standardization in the future through joint financing.<\/p>\n
Consistent framework conditions for climate protection<\/strong><\/p>\n And that is also urgently needed in view of the large number of political initiatives from Brussels: In addition to the EU biodiversity strategy, EU forest monitoring, the Nature Restoration Law, RED III, the directive on the overall energy efficiency of buildings and the LULUCF regulation, there are numerous topics on the agenda. Kimmich adds: \"It is becoming increasingly challenging for companies to implement the new requirements and opportunities.\"<\/p>\n So that the sawmill and timber industry in Europe can play an even stronger role in such issues in the future, the associations in the DACH region want to cooperate more closely in the future - and thus achieve framework conditions in terms of climate protection. \u201cWe can only make a difference in Europe if we are a strong, united voice. It must be made clear to the European institutions that climate protection can only be successfully promoted with the use of wood from sustainable forest management in buildings and in other durable wood products,\" emphasizes Markus Schm\u00f6lzer, Chairman of the Austrian Sawmill Industry.<\/p>\n Reconcile standardization<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition to political initiatives from Brussels, future priorities in standardization were also discussed. \u201cThe regulatory density of the European institutions, but also of the respective local governments, has been increasing for years. The effects affect our companies and the entire value chain: from the forest to the sawmills to the wood processing industry.
