Recent auctions in Germany reveal considerably higher prices for hardwoods, and especially for oaks.<\/p>\n
The auction in Wettenberg in Hessen, Germany, approx. 60 kilometers north of Frankfurt a.M., on the 15th of December 2022. 494 cubic meters of oak stems from state-, municipal-, and private forests were offered at the auction. 26 bidders from Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Germany submitted bids.<\/p>\n
Even though many of the offered stems had lower quality than the year before due to drought and heat damages, the prices were higher. The forest owners were (of course) very satisfied with the situation as they all are facing vast reforestation after years of bark-beetle and drought damage to their forests and need financing for that.<\/p>\n
The average price for the oak logs in Wettenberg was 1.090 \u20ac per cubic meter*. That is to be compared with last year\u2019s auction at the same place, 882 \u20ac. An increase of 24 percent.<\/p>\n
The highest price at the auction was for a 3,49 cubic meter oak log that was purchased by a German veneer manufacturer for 2.769 \u20ac per cubic meter or a total of 9.664 \u20ac.<\/p>\n
Auction in Northeim: Top prices again<\/strong><\/p>\n On Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, the traditional Northeim variegated and oak timber submission took place for the 32nd time. Oak and ash were the dominant types of wood.<\/p>\n The Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture carries out the submission together with Holzlagerplatz Vogelbeck GbR for private and corporate forests. 769 m\u00b3 (previous year 804 m\u00b3) were offered at the wood storage yard of the private forest in Vogelbeck.<\/p>\n 33 (previous year: 45) bidders submitted 2,530 (previous year: 4,767) bids. Except for 12 m3 all wood was added. Despite the reduced number of bidders, new record prices were achieved and the previous year's records were exceeded once again.<\/p>\n Oak was the most important type of wood with 433 m3 (56%, previous year 501 fm). The average price is \u20ac975\/m3 (\u20ac843\/m3) \u20ac132\/m3 or 16% higher than last year. This marks a new high in the history of timber submissions. An oak trunk achieved the highest bid at \u20ac2,837\/m3 (previous year: \u20ac2,290\/m3).<\/p>\n The ash wood was also in demand. The average price rose by 12% to \u20ac286\/m3 (previous year: \u20ac256\/m3). At the top, an ash trunk fetched \u20ac406\/m3 (previous year: \u20ac449\/m3).<\/p>\n In addition, 54 m3 of quality Douglas fir wood brought in an average of \u20ac277\/m3 (previous year: 229, +21%) and 24 m3 of valuable larch wood, also \u20ac277\/m3 (previous year: 261, +6%).<\/p>\n Since the demand for beech logs is very high this season, selected beech logs were submitted again. On average, these yielded 223 \u20ac\/m\u00b3 (previous year 131, +70%).<\/p>\n Germany wood auction sellers hope for good prices in Malchin<\/strong><\/p>\n In January, trunks of up to 220-year-old deciduous trees such as oaks are traditionally auctioned in Malchin. According to experts, prices have increased by 20 to 30 percent.<\/p>\n In Malchin (Mecklenburg Lake District) valuable logs are again being sold to the highest bidder. With the traditional hardwood submission - a kind of written auction - the State Forestry Agency of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania hopes for the highest possible proceeds in view of the development on the wood market. In addition to the state forest, municipal and private forest owners are also involved.<\/p>\n At similar auctions and sales in Germany, wood prices are currently 20 to 30 percent higher than in the previous year: in 2022 it was 521,000 euros in Malchin. The price per cubic meter of oak was 1,042 euros, so that the most expensive trunk fetched around 10,000 euros. A total of around 530 cubic meters of hardwood were offered this time, which accounted for around 200 strong tree trunks.<\/p>\n 400 cubic meters of this are sessile and pedunculate oaks that are between 180 and 220 years old. The robust oaks come mainly from the forestry offices of Bad Doberan, Schlemmin (West Pomerania-R\u00fcgen) and Dargun (Mecklenburg Lake District). Among the other eleven tree species, ash and sycamore are represented with around 30 cubic meters. A black walnut, which is currently being cultivated more intensively due to climate change, and a small-leaved lime are offered as special features. Traditionally companies from the veneer and sawing industry as well as the timber trade from Denmark, Poland and Germany take part in the auction in Malchin.
