The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is committed to standardizing building regulations for timber construction in Europe.\u00a0According to the EESC working paper for an opinion commissioned by the Swedish EU Presidency, one of the things EU member states should aim for is to increase the below-average use of wood in public buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The proportion of wood used as a building material in the EU is currently only 3%, so the potential of timber construction for climate protection is far from being exhausted.<\/span><\/p>\n In the current working document, the EESC agrees with the Commission's view that natural and sustainable (construction) materials are of the utmost importance for the green transition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In connection with climate protection, the Committee also emphasizes the inseparable connection between the potential of timber construction and sustainable forest management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, the sink effect of the forest is limited, which is why the greater lever for climate protection can be seen above all in the substitution of fossil raw materials and energy sources with wood.<\/span><\/p>\n In the working paper, the committee criticizes the building law hurdles that still exist - despite great progress in recent years - for the use of building materials made from renewable raw materials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There are different legal regulations for building with wood, partly nationally, such as in Germany.\u00a0The EESC therefore calls for further harmonization of building regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The EESC also called for the use of wood to be increased in public buildings and for climate protection criteria to be taken into account when awarding contracts.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is committed to standardizing building regulations for timber construction in Europe.\u00a0According to the EESC working paper for an opinion commissioned by the Swedish EU Presidency, one of the things EU member states should … Continue reading
