At the turn of the year, the mood in the German timber industry brightened noticeably. According to the index calculated by the Munich-based ifo Institute, companies rated their business situation significantly better in December than in the previous month. The pessimism with regard to the coming months also eased noticeably.<\/p>\n
The assessment of the overall economic situation is likely to play a role here.\u00a0According to economic researchers, the recession is likely to be less severe than initially expected by many.\u00a0It is true that the high inflation rate and rising construction interest rates are still having a negative impact on the sector's economy.<\/p>\n
However, the assessment of the current situation recovered significantly in December to -8 points (previous month: -17.7 points).<\/p>\n
The outlook for the coming six months also improved - starting from a very low level - to a value of -43.9 points (previous month: -54.2 points).\u00a0Overall, the Main Association of the German Timber Industry (HDH) economic indicator climbed to -26.9 points in December (previous month: -37 points).<\/p>\n
In view of the different impacts on the individual segments, the mood in the German timber industry remained mixed. Companies in the construction-related area of \u200b\u200bthe wood industry (+18.3 points), in the wood packaging industry (+7.9 points) and in the furniture industry (+7.7 points) assessed their current business situation as positive.<\/p>\n
However, the expectations in all segments indicate negative developments in the coming months. In particular, the wood packaging industry (-61.9 points), the sawmill industry (-60 points) and prefabricated timber construction (-52.5 points) have recently looked to the future with concern: these segments expect the business situation to deteriorate significantly in the next six months.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
