Swedish sawmills have received large quantities of timber attacked by spruce bark beetles, mainly in southern Sweden.\u00a0There is even a risk that this timber will not be sawed at all, which means a loss for the forest owner and an unnecessary waste.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

''Swedish and European customers and builders do not want wood that has turned blue as a result of the trees dying from spruce bark beetle attacks. Although there is nothing really wrong with the wood properties. Blued spruce bark timber is a problem for Swedish sawmills. The problem will be less if we can get more people to understand that blued structural timber is good timber,'' says Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at Skogsindustrierna, the Swedish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n

Swedish sawmills have often had to turn to the markets in the US and China to find customers who accept wood with blueing.\u00a0During the pandemic, it happened that Germany exported its spruce bark beetle-damaged timber to the United States.\u00a0At the same time as fresh wood was imported from Sweden to Germany.<\/p>\n

''In the USA, people are used to using wood with blueing and have long understood that it makes no difference.\u00a0It is clear that we in Europe also need to get better at using blued timber, and stop downgrading otherwise prime structural timber due to cosmetic defects and an unfounded concern.\u00a0The bluing certainly has different liquid absorption, but that's nothing that matters when it's built into a construction.\u00a0As Swedish bark beetle attacks continue, this will become an issue we cannot turn a blind eye to in the Swedish and European market,'' says Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
