Average pulpwood prices fell an average of 2% in October. Prices continued to fall in the large and medium softwood lumber segment.

The latter is mainly due to a fall in the production of construction materials. According to the latest data from the Latvian Central Statistical Office over the past nine months, manufacturing has fallen by 12.5%. This resulted in a 4% price drop for large pine lumber and a 7% price drop for thick spruce lumber. We saw an increase in prices in the birch segment, which is normal for the season.

This statistical data is based on information from E-silva, the largest forest auction system in Latvia.

As usual, autumn felling will be less available as many timber supply roads become impassable during rainy weather. This increased the value of logging sites near accessible roads. Trading volume is stable and on the rise. To make up for the lack of production, companies that produce wood chips are expanding their production.

The warm autumn this year has meant that the heating season has not yet begun in Latvia, but woodfuel is being produced in excess and stockpiles are forming.

Wood fuel prices stabilized in October. However, prices have fallen slightly in the first few weeks of November. This decline may be temporary. At the same time, wood fuel prices remain at record highs. Aspen and black alder firewood prices have increased by an average of €2.8/m3 per month over the last five months. The average price of firewood was 80 EUR/m3 at the end of October.

The decline in the sawmill segment is related to lower construction volumes in Latvia and other countries. Given the downward trend seen in softwood lumber, sawmills have decided to reduce their production due to the declining demand for construction materials in the global market. As a result, the average price of thick pine sawlogs fell to €102.81/m3 in October. Prices peaked at 114 EUR/m3. The price of thick spruce sawlogs fell to €95.19/m3, peaking at €104/m3.

The average price of pine and spruce pulpwood reached €88/m3 in October, 2% lower than in early September. Birch pulpwood prices he rose in October, but fell from €130/m3 to €127/m3 at the beginning of November. This is related to changes in demand in the market.

As a result of overproduction, Latvian timber prices have fallen slightly, perhaps temporarily.
