At the COP 27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Austria's timber industry is focusing on the sector's contribution to climate protection. In order to effectively counter climate change, CO 2 emissions must be reduced and CO 2 removed from the atmosphere. \u201cSustainable forest management and the use of wood make an important contribution to solving the climate issue. In order to counter climate change effectively and strengthen the economy at the same time, we expect politicians to make a clear commitment to sustainable forest management and the increased use of wood in durable products,\u201d demands Herbert J\u00f6bstl, Chairman of the Austrian Wood Industry Association.<\/p>\n

Creating climate-friendly forests<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trees absorb CO 2 from the atmosphere, store carbon and release oxygen into the atmosphere. But the forest is not a stable and secure carbon store. Tree growth is finite. They rot, and the bound carbon escapes into the atmosphere as CO 2 . Forest fires also cause CO 2-Emissions. J\u00f6bstl explains: \u201cClimate change requires active forest management. Managed forests are better equipped to deal with the climatic and ecological challenges than forests left to their own devices. The ability of the forest ecosystem to regenerate is strengthened more quickly and specifically through management than through natural processes, for which climate change is progressing too quickly. In addition, the managed and rejuvenated forest can absorb CO 2 again and more extensively than overaged stands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Increase use of wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wood use prolongs carbon storage in wood products and timber construction . \u201cOur companies manufacture a wide variety of CO 2 storage systems from wood, for example wooden high-rise buildings up to 100 meters high, wide-span hall roofs, high-quality furniture, parquet floors, wooden materials, doors and windows. The timber industry constantly produces a \"second forest\" and thus prevents CO 2 emissions,\" says J\u00f6bstl, adding: \"Wood does not have to be manufactured, it grows in nature. Wood is recyclable and replaces CO 2 - as well as energy-intensive materials and products made from fossil raw materials.\"<\/p>\n

Combine economy and climate protection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coping with climate change also requires a strong economy that finances innovation and can continue to offer people jobs and income. For climate protection, it is therefore not only necessary to formulate ambitious goals, but also to take feasible measures and keep an eye on the competitiveness of the economy. It is of fundamental importance for the timber industry to obtain the raw material wood from sustainable forest management. J\u00f6bstl rejects ideas and plans to put forest areas out of use and to block them for timber harvesting and emphasizes: \u201cPutting a cheese dome on the forests and reducing the availability of the raw material wood serves neither climate protection nor biodiversity. It is not solution-oriented2 repositories can be reduced. We appeal to politicians, especially the institutions of the European Union, to ensure that forests grow and can be used sustainably and to enable additional uses of wood from our own raw material potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
