The downward trend in the Douglas fir market is now clearly confirmed.\u00a0We can even speak of a serious drop in prices since the end of last spring.\u00a0In the space of barely 6 months, demand has become almost sluggish on France's domestic market, in Europe and in major export markets.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGermany no longer buys Douglas fir, and the Belgian and Dutch buyers have disappeared,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Jean-Philippe Bazot, logger-sawyer and president of the France Douglas association, said recently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Internationally, timber trade fell sharply in the first\u00a0<\/span>half of the year (-20% over the first<\/span>\u00a0half of last year).\u00a0Softwood lumber, including Douglas fir, is particularly affected because the US construction market has turned around.\u00a0Moreover, the new Covid-19 containment measures in China will not improve its economic activity, which had already started to slow down since the start of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

In France, the construction sector is cracking: -11.8% of housing permits over the period May to July 2022 and -2.1% in housing starts.\u00a0The general context is worrying: the war in Ukraine, difficulties in supplying materials, galloping inflation, rising borrowing rates, complications in obtaining loans, stoppage of construction sites in progress...<\/span><\/p>\n

Douglas sawmillers are faced with collapsing orders and sharply falling prices as the raw material was acquired at high costs until early 2022. At the same time, prohibitive electricity costs are putting a severe strain on the manufacturing cost, and some large Douglas fir processors are now concentrating their operations on 4 out of 5 working days, or even less.\u00a0\u201cThe traders who had been engaged in the Douglas boom by buying a lot are now trying to destock rapidly<\/em>,\u201d a market insider stated.<\/p>\n

Today, the trap closes.\u00a0In the forests, the euphoria that reigned over the Douglas fir for 2 years is now over.\u00a0It is a sudden depreciation in the value of Douglas fir that sellers have been witnessing, especially since September.\u00a0It is even a collapse of prices and volumes marketed.\u00a0The results of the last fall auctions in private forests confirm the closure of the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the case in the Massif Central where the auction of October 27, 2022, organized entirely online by the Experts Forestiers de Franc resulted in an impressive unsold rate: nearly 80%. of the 7,000 m3 of Douglas fir offered for bulk sale remained without buyers.\u00a0A year earlier, at the same bid, practically all 30,000 m3 of Douglas fir had gone, only 5% had not found buyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reality is that with an average annual drop in prices estimated at 40%, the Douglas fir has come back down to earth.\u00a0It must be said that its prices have reached new heights: while in 2018 2 m3 logs were worth barely more than 60 euros\/m3 (1), in 2021, they were trading at almost 115 euros\/m3.\u00a0Today, this type of wood has returned to its 2017-2018 value (see table below).\u00a0In just one sales campaign, the value of the Douglas has depreciated by half.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luc Detruy, one of the expert contributors of lots at the end of October sale in the Massif Central, confirms the depression that has gripped the Douglas.\u00a0\u201cThe offers that we have collected, in very small numbers, are at very low prices.\u00a0However<\/em>\u00a0, this expert notes that fir and spruce are holding up better and that the year-on-year price drop is only 10%.\u00a0\"These are now two substitute species for Douglas fir and on certain very attractive lots of spruce, we have recorded up to 12 offers\"<\/em>\u00a0, points out the forestry expert.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
