In the third quarter of 2022, softwood log prices continued to trend downward, while hardwood log prices increased. Unbelievably high prices for pulpwood and firewood rose significantly despite their already exceptionally high price levels.

According to the price statistics of the Estonian Private Forest Center, the price of softwood logs continued to fall in the third quarter of 2022. The prices of pine logs fell by nearly 5%, spruce logs by nearly 9% and spruce small logs by 11.5%. Certainly, the rather intensive import of logs from Russia and the ongoing bark beetle infestation have played their part in the price drop until the beginning of the third quarter, but the cooling of the economy is starting to have an increasing effect. Compared to the prices of a year ago, the prices of pine logs are well up, while the prices of spruce logs have fallen moderately.

During the year, the price of pine wood has increased by 17.8% (€19.4/m3) and pine fine wood by 12.6% (€12.3/m3). At the same time, spruce wood has become cheaper by 4.3% (€4.5/m3) and spruce fine wood by 4.5% (€4.4/m3). Based on the price statistics of the Private Forest Center, in September, a cubic meter of pine logs cost 128.43 euros, 109.82 euros for small pine logs, 100.19 euros for spruce logs, and 93.41 euros for small spruce logs .

The rapid price growth has continued on Estonia's pulpwood market. The price increase of hardwood pulpwood has been about twice as fast as that of softwood pulpwood. However, this does not mean that the price of softwood pulpwood has risen slightly. In three months, the price of pine pulpwood increased by 18.3%, the price of spruce pulpwood by 21%, the price of aspen wood by 40% and the price of birch wood by 40.5%. With such price increase percentages, it is understandable why birch pulpwood continues to hold the title of the most expensive variety.

Prices for all varieties are at an all-time high and this means that compared to a year ago, the price increase has been exceptionally high. Thus, pine pulpwood has become more expensive by 138.2% (€50.6/m3), spruce pulpwood by 145.7% (€52.2/m3), birch pulpwood by 171.6% (€78.6/m3) and aspen pulpwood by as much as 182.9 % (€59.7/m3).

Behind such a crazy price increase, in addition to the decline of Russian wood, there is also the energy crisis that has gripped Europe and the higher demand for energy wood, and the resulting exceptionally high price increase of energy wood. As of the end of the third quarter of 2022, based on the price statistics of the Private Forest Center, the average price for pine pulpwood was €87.18/m3, for spruce pulpwood 87.96 €/m3, for birch pulpwood 124.39 €/m3 and for aspen pulpwood 92.31 €/m3.

<td class="td1"
