The economic slowdown in China has started to affect FOB prices with prices for okoume, beli and some of the redwoods popular in China feeling downward pressure.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, producers report FOB prices forother species such as Ovangkol and Okan are stable. There are rumours that the authorities in China are to boost housing growth after the Chinese New Year which falls towards the end of January<\/p>\n

Also in the news are Middle East markets where FOB prices are also trending lower as stocks in the region are above normal. The exception is iroko which is actively sought as an alternative for teak in some enduses Most sawmills in Cameroon are now back in operation but contract positions have weakened to around 1-2-months.<\/p>\n

Heavy rain is reported in some areas but this is not hampering work, in contrast with Gabon where rain continues to be heavy and disrupting transportation.<\/p>\n

Slowdown in China \u2013 stocks accumulating<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mills in Cameroon were expected to be back in full operation this month but the wet weather continues and producers say it will be some time before they can resume full production.<\/p>\n

With the slowdown in demand in China log stocks have accumulated in the port and there are reports that degraded logs, no longer suitable for export, are being purchased by local mills.<\/p>\n

All producers who were heavily committed to the Chinese market are feeling the effects of the weakening demand in the Chinese market and this is likely to spill over to price volatility.<\/p>\n

There are reports that in recent weeks buyers for the Chinese market have been asking to renegotiate contracts. What will be interesting is the impact of the ban on log prices especially for ayous, sapelli, sipo, iroko, talli, tiama and doussie<\/p>\n

With the decision by CEMAC countries to stop log exports it is expected that there will be a surplus of logs available until the pace of harvesting matches demand from mills. Concern has been expressed that the export ban will result in job losses but some say millers will welcome additional workers.<\/p>\n
