And there is no end in sight to the fall in prices. However, prices had previously risen dramatically. Buyers (including bulk buyers) are now asking themselves whether they should buy now or wait a little longer. Most recently, prices have fallen by EUR 20 per tonne every week and are already scratching the EUR 600 mark.

At the end of October, consumers had to pay around 630 to 640 euros per ton for wood pellets , according to retailers. That was 115 euros less than a month ago, when prices were 745 euros per ton, according to the German Pellet Institute. In September, pellets cost around 800 euros per ton.

Since then, however, it has fallen steeply by almost 200 euros. Despite the fact that prices have recently fallen significantly, by 15% in October alone, pellets still cost more than twice as much as a year ago. At that time you only had to pay 240 euros.

According to dealers, the reason for the price slide is falling demand - because many consumers stocked up before winter - and the sharp drop in prices for other fuels such as gas and heating oil on the spot market is also having an effect. Apparently, gas prices not only affect the prices for electricity, but also for other fuels.

Falling lumber prices and recession fears point to a further fall in wood pellet prices, some German traders say. More and more pellet dealers are therefore reporting a "normalization of prices" and, above all, of delivery times.

The falling prices are also bringing more consumers back to the market. However, the pellet market in Germany and Europe is still influenced by many factors. In addition to the extremely high prices for gas, electricity and heating oil, this also includes the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Before the war, the Europeans imported large amounts of wood pellets from Russia – but also from Belarus and the Ukraine. That's over now.

In October, the prices for wood pellets in Germany fell by more than 100 euros per ton.
