Forestry giants in Northern Europe, Stora Enso, UPM and Mets\u00e4 Group have benefited from the rising prices on their financial results for Q3\/2022, however the outlook remains cautious.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Excellent result from Stora Enso<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stora Enso's third quarter was strong.\u00a0In July-September, the company's net sales grew by 15 percent to nearly 3 billion euros, operating profit by 29 percent to 527 million euros, and earnings per share to 0.47 euros for the quarter.<\/p>\n

\"This was the best third-quarter net sales since 2007. Operating profit increased to 527 million euros, which was the best quarterly operating profit since the beginning of the 2000s,\" says the company's CEO,\u00a0Annica Bresky.<\/p>\n

According to him, however, there are visible signs of a slowdown in the economy, which may also affect Stora Enso's operations before long.<\/p>\n

The company expects pulp demand to remain stable in the last quarter of the year.\u00a0The demand for consumer packaging boards is also stable and the order backlog is strong.\u00a0In wood products, the decline in the market for traditional sawn goods continues from the peak level of the first half of the year.<\/p>\n

The demand for wood is estimated to remain the same as the previous quarter in the last quarter.\u00a0The demand for softwood is strong, but the demand for logs decreases as the lumber market weakens.<\/p>\n

UPM substantiates its positive outlook following the record strong Q3 2022 results<\/strong><\/p>\n

UPM substantiates its positive outlook for 2022 following the record strong Q3 2022 results. UPM\u2019s Q3 2022 sales grew by 36% to EUR 3,420 million (2,523 million), and comparable EBIT grew by 84% to EUR 779 million (424 million). UPM\u2019s financial performance is expected to continue above last year\u2019s level and comparable EBIT is expected to increase in 2022 from 2021.<\/p>\n

Exceptionally high uncertainty continues in the business environment, as highlighted in UPM\u2019s previous outlook. However, during Q3 2022 no major downside risks materialised and UPM reached record quarterly earnings.<\/p>\n

In Q3 2022 good demand continued in most of UPM businesses, and sales prices offset the impact of continued increase in variable costs. Production and delivery volumes were back to normal and operational efficiency was on a good level.<\/p>\n

The quarter was successful in all businesses. UPM Energy, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Raflatac, UPM Communication Papers and UPM Biofuels all made new record quarterly results. In addition, UPM Fibres and UPM Plywood achieved strong results.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group\u2019s sales increased in January\u2013September 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group\u2019s sales in January\u2013September 2022 were Euro 5,238.8 million, compared to Euro 4,456.8 in January\u2013September 2021. Sales increased due to higher sales prices of pulp compared with the previous year, among other factors.<\/p>\n

The comparable operating result was Euro 965.5 million (694.0), or 18.4% (15.6) of sales. The increase in the operating result is also explained by the rise in the sales prices of pulp, among other factors.<\/p>\n

President and CEO Ilkka H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4 says: \u201cMets\u00e4 Group\u2019s business operations as a whole were very profitable in the 3Q. Despite the strong financial performance and the outlook for the fourth quarter, longer-term outlooks continue to be difficult to predict.<\/p>\n

The sawn timber market has seen a decrease in demand and prices during the third quarter after a long period of exceptionally strong performance. The situation is affected by the outlook of the European economy, which has caused a decrease in activity in the construction industry. Similar effects can be seen in the LVL and spruce plywood markets.
