The halt in Russian imports has pushed up the price of birch wood in Finland, which is in high demand for industry as well as home heating.<\/p>\n

Due to explosive demand since late summer, some Finnish firewood vendors have doubled their prices.<\/p>\n

\"This energy crisis came as a bit of a surprise to everyone. The price of dry birch wood has doubled, and there is also pressure to increase prices further this winter,\" said CEO Pentti Karttunen of Maatukku, one of Finland's biggest firewood retailers, based in Vantaa.<\/p>\n

Some Finnish wood dealers shut down their online stores in late summer because they could not keep up with demand. According to Karttunen, orders were coming in by the minute, spurring a backlog in deliveries of unprocessed wood.<\/p>\n

Maatukku has raised its price for a cubic metre of dried birch firewood, also known as a stere, to 145 euros. Birch has one of the highest heat contents among Finland's most common tree species.<\/p>\n

Higher costs for fuel, electricity and other basics have pushed up producers' wholesale prices. Another major firewood dealer, the Espoo-based Klapila, reports that its purchase price for wood has increased by about 30 percent.<\/p>\n

\"It's a seller's market now, and that's reflected in the prices. We've had inquiries from all over the Nordic countries,\" Klapila's owner, Marjaana Suominen, told Yle.<\/p>\n

According to Suominen, owners of houses with electric heating in particular are preparing for the coming winter by purchasing firewood, hoping to reduce their electricity bills. Experts warn however that burning wood does produce unhealthy fine particles and other forms of air pollution.<\/p>\n

Tapio Tuoma, CEO of Lapland Forest Products, said that his firm has already sold out of firewood, which normally doesn't happen until December. \"You just have to say no to everyone,\" he said.<\/p>\n

Klapila and Maatukku still have firewood on hand, though. According to Suominen, there is no reason for panic buying.<\/p>\n

With wood in high demand this autumn, cabin owners have been warned to protect themselves from uninvited guests. Firewood has also been stolen from public campfire sites in Tampere, for instance.<\/p>\n

Birch also in demand in industry<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is strong demand for firewood in other European countries as well, said Marjo Maidell, a forest economist at Pellervo Economic Research (PTT).<\/p>\n

\"This isn't just a Finnish phenomenon. According to forecasts, energy prices will remain high throughout the winter, and that will affect the demand for firewood,\" she said.<\/p>\n

Wood for industrial needs is no longer imported from Russia. According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), in 2021, 74 percent of the raw wood imported to Finland came from Russia. Ninety percent of this was wood chips and birch fibre wood, which is also used as firewood.<\/p>\n

\"Since this amount has disappeared from the market, buyers are trying to procure replacement wood on the domestic market,\" said Maidell.<\/p>\n

Replacing Russian imports with domestic birch is not easy as birch often grows in mixed forests alongside other tree species. According to Maidell, raw wood prices have also risen in Finland's southern neighbour, Estonia.<\/p>\n

According to PTT estimates, the use of domestic wood will increase next year.<\/p>\n

\"For example, Mets\u00e4 Fibre's bioproduct factory that will start up in Kemi at the end of next year will increase demand,\" she noted.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
