The buyer lacks raw material, wood. The price for the forest has risen, but the price for felling is not rising so fast, because there is still a developer in the middle. There have been very rapid changes in a short period of time.

The industry cannot adapt so quickly to the existing, new situation. There is a lack of workers, there is no one to cut the tree, there is no one to bring it and take it away," Shniker said.

This is another reason for the price increase, which is basically dictated by Ukrainian war and the lack of wood in Europe. Forest auctioneer Šnikers predicted that in the near future both firewood and pulpwood will increase in price by 5% every month. "For now, only [the price] will increase, certainly for the final product, because one is the increase in the price of this wood, the other is the increase in energy, labor, supply, fuel (..) [prices]. As a result, the price increase is even more noticeable and painful for the end consumer," said an expert.

''High wood prices have activated private foresters who are rushing to sell wood. Therefore, sawmills have moved from state forests to private ones,'' Artūrs Bukonts, executive director of the Latvian Association of Independent Loggers said.

"The second part of the story is the upside-down wood market, where usually the so-called low-value wood, or wood for energy, begins to exceed and reach the price of timber. Accordingly, in most cases, owners go to the forest not, as usual, for logs and sawlogs, but for firewood (. .)," said Bucont.

Therefore, to say a little exaggeration, the producers of sawlogs and veneer blocks are standing idle, increasing the deficit in this market and increasing the prices of raw materials.

"It is clear that service providers, also taking into account the fact that there are problems in the struggle for labor and the only solution is higher wages, chose to shift their priorities to private forests. This caused some problems in the state forest sector. The good news is that now we also in the national forests, we see a clear plan in which way we can produce what has been delayed in the third quarter until the end of the year (..)," said the executive director of the Latvian Association of Independent Loggers.

Industry experts assessed that in the conditions of general price increase and uncertainty, warehouses in Europe are full of finished wood products, which is why their prices are falling rapidly. This was also confirmed by Kristaps Klauss, executive director of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation.

"It is very possible that this defect will even turn into an effect. Namely, at the moment, for sawn timber - both those intended for construction and those intended for the production of containers - not only the prices have significantly decreased, but also the demand is falling, because the warehouses are quite full Therefore, in the short term, Latvian sawmills - both those that produce for packaging and those that produce for the building material market - have a challenge even with the physical sale of goods, not to mention the price," admitted Klaus.

Klaus assessed that a recession is expected in the industry soon. "Will this have a very significant impact on our competitiveness in the medium or long term? However, I would boldly say no.

We have good enough reserves that we don't have questions about existential threats. But the fact that during these winter months the previously accumulated reserves or saved money for investments will be diverted to simply survive and hibernate, this will be quite a reality for most or many companies."

On the other hand, with autumn, changes are also expected in the work of loggers, because some of the wettest ones will look for dry ones, from which wood can be taken out, and then the market may no longer be determined only by wood chips and firewood.

Currently, there is a shortage of wood and especially pellets in Europe. And at least not yet, it is not expected that wood prices in Latvia will return to pre-Ukraine war levels, when they were lower. This is according to the forecasts … Continue reading →

[4716,4715,4714
3569,3722,3698,3675
post-83121","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","category-wood-industry-prices","tag-latvia","tag-log-prices","tag-pine","tag-spruce","topic-forestry","topic-industry-prices","topic-sawmilling","area-europe

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
