Despite the fact that raw material costs are still very high, the price of pellets is falling somewhat and in October averaged €743.81/t (sales of 6 t).

That is 2.6% less than in the previous month and 199.8% more than in October 2021, i.e. still three times the price a year ago, as reported by the German Pellet Institute (DEPI). The price for one kilowatt hour of heat from pellets is 14.88 ct/kWh, which corresponds to a price advantage of 9% over heating oil and 26% over natural gas.

Less raw material

In the meantime, most private customers have stocked up on pellets for the winter, says Martin Bentele, Managing Director at DEPI. The supply is secured, albeit with continued high chip prices.

As construction projects are canceled or put on hold, less lumber is needed and therefore less sawn. Accordingly, there is less residual wood in the sawmill, which is in demand at high prices. At the same time, manufacturing and logistics costs remain high. The only option left to retailers is to pass on the additional costs to the consumer.

Regional prices

The regional differences in the price of pellets in October 2022 are as follows (sales of 6 t): The price for pellets is lowest in southern Germany at €729.03/t. Pellets cost €748.31/t in the central region and €784.36/t in north/east Germany.

Larger quantities (26 t) will be traded in October 2022 at the following conditions: South: 713.59 €/t, Central: 728.36 €/t, North/East: 757.45 €/t (all incl.
