A big question in the wood market is how to replace Russian wood. Primarily, a substitute can be found in Finland, and we will see an increase in felling volumes in 2023. The price of logs will decline, but the price of pulpwood will continue to rise.

"Replacing imported wood from Russia will not be a problem this year, because the use of wood in the Finnish forest industry will decrease considerably. The reason is the work stoppage at the beginning of the year at UPM's factories and previous cuts in production capacity," says research director Paula Horne.

Next year, wood consumption in the Finnish forest industry will increase by almost six percent, or nearly four million cubic meters, as production increases in both the pulp and wood product industries.

In the spring, it was speculated that imports from other countries could increase and partially replace Russian imports. This has not happened, but the import volumes from the Baltics and Sweden have clearly decreased. In January-June, the import of wood to Finland has decreased by 62 percent.

"Baltic softwood is in demand elsewhere as well, and its price has skyrocketed. So there is no relief for the need for wood from abroad, but the eyes are turning to the homeland", says Paula Horne.

In 2023, investments in Finland's forest industry will especially increase the need for pulpwood, and market felling will increase by about three percent and will reach close to 66 million cubic meters. However, the amount of wood used is still clearly lower than in 2021.

The wood trade is becoming more lively as the need for pulpwood increases

In the wood market, the amount of vertical trade for the whole of 2022 will be 14 percent lower than last year. However, the comparison point is the exceptionally busy last year, so the number of transactions still remains high. Last year, vertical warehouses also accumulated, which reduces this year's demand.

Next year's growing need for wood will increase pressure on the domestic wood market. Industry needs wood, and forest owners' intention to sell remains at the level of previous years.

The annual average carrying price of logs will increase by around seven percent this year. Next year, the annual average prices of softwood logs will decrease slightly due to a clear decrease in sawnwood prices. The annual average price of softwood will end up increasing by around five percent this year. The price increase will continue at a level of around three percent next year. The price of birch pulpwood will rise more than softwood pulpwood due to the end of Russian imports.

The demand for wood in Finland will increase next year and the wood trade in private forests will continue to be brisk, says the Finnish Pellervo Taloustutkimus PTT’s forest industry forecast.
