The world is currently facing major challenges.\u00a0Interest rates are rising rapidly and sharply, the costs of energy are high and a significant slowdown in the economy is expected.\u00a0This also hits the Swedish forest industry hard - but there are also examples of unexpected strength and glimmers of light in the future.\u00a0This is shown by Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustriena) in a recent market report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The war in Ukraine and an ill-conceived energy policy have led to skyrocketing energy prices.\u00a0The Swedish forest industry accounts for roughly 15 percent of the total electricity use in Sweden and is fully 40 percent self-sufficient in electricity.\u00a0But the conditions look different for the companies, and many are affected by the current situation.<\/p>\n

''The high electricity prices are a result of poorly thought-out political decisions.\u00a0The lack of long-term vision and stability, combined with late monetary policy, is now affecting the Swedish economy in the form of general high inflation and a weak economy.\u00a0The rising interest rates, high construction costs, falling housing prices and the great uncertainty about the development are expected to lead to a decline in construction investments and consumption.\u00a0It affects the forest industry negatively,'' says Kerstin Hallsten, chief economist at Skogsindustriern.<\/p>\n

A change in trend is already noticeable on the wood product market, with reduced demand.<\/p>\n

''We see a clearly declining market, but the Swedish sawmill industry has a number of strong years behind it and is well equipped.\u00a0In a few years' time, Sweden's global importance as a forest nation will increase.\u00a0We must dare to be proud of our Swedish forestry and the benefits it offers - not only for ourselves but also for our trading partners.\u00a0It creates opportunities for greater independence and self-sufficiency within Europe,'' says Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at Skogsindustriern.<\/p>\n

The pulp and paper market is showing unexpected strength with so far high price levels.\u00a0Katrin Heinsoo is a market analyst for paper and pulp at Skogsindustriern and sees how the exchange rate affects exports:<\/p>\n

''The market for paper products is strong, although deliveries and prices in some segments have started to fall.\u00a0There is great uncertainty about the development of production costs and how reduced consumption and e-commerce affect the packaging industry.\u00a0At the same time, exports benefit from the weak Swedish krona.\u00a0The export value of paper and cardboard has increased by 25 percent so far this year and the corresponding figure for pulp is 20 percent,'' says Katrin Heinsoo.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
